This book is about the structure and function of computers. Its purpose is to present, as
clearly and completely as possible, the nature and characteristics of modern-day computer
This task is challenging for several reasons. First, there is a tremendous variety of products
that can rightly claim the name of computer, from single-chip microprocessors costing a
few dollars to supercomputers costing tens of millions of dollars. Variety is exhibited not
only in cost, but also in size, performance, and application....

From the very beginning of the transition from the traditional purchasing system reviews to the
redesigned assessment approach that replaced them, it was understood that further refinement
and continuous improvement was planned. Consistent with that long-term strategy, and building
on the originally redesigned federal purchasing assessments, the business system assessment
models of the PEAmembers have evolved to be more aligned with the Balanced Scorecard
(BSC) approach to performance measurement and management, which is currently in use by
many “world class” private corporations.
Needs assessment is an important step in the performance improvement business. It precedes the design and development of any human resource development (HRD) or human performance technology (HPT) initiative. Needs assessment is a process for examining and framing peoplerelated problems and performance improvement opportunities. It might be initiated in response to a problem or opportunity, or it might be used in ongoing learning or performance improvement efforts.
Supervisors, managers and their co-workers seemed to be attending an
awful lot of training courses, but this didn’t seem to have the impact on ‘onthe-
job’ performance that it needed to have. In fact many managers were
disillusioned with much of the training and development activity going on.
At the time, most training programmes suffered from a lack of measurable,
clearly specified outcomes and measured results. Most training programmes
were evaluated on the ‘Did you enjoy it?’ measure, or people sat for a threehour
For decades Japan has remained at or near the top of international assessments of student learning; and in the past decade, students in Japan have become more engaged in learning. However, the government aspires to improve learning outcomes even further.
These definitions are placed in the historical order of their appearance in the language.
So the earliest use of a handbookwas as a set of instructions which members of particular
occupations kept at hand in order to be able to refer to them when they were uncertain of
how to tackle a problem at work. The most recent definition, by way of contrast, refers
to a scholarly book consisting of separate essays or articles.
In finance and healthcare, event processing systems handle
sensitive data on behalf of many clients. Guaranteeing
information security in such systems is challenging
because of their strict performance requirements in terms
of high event throughput and low processing latency.
We describe DEFCON, an event processing system
that enforces constraints on event flows between event
processing units. DEFCON uses a combination of static
and runtime techniques for achieving light-weight isolation
of event flows, while supporting efficient sharing of
Traditional Active Learning (AL) techniques assume that the annotation of each datum costs the same. This is not the case when annotating sequences; some sequences will take longer than others. We show that the AL technique which performs best depends on how cost is measured. Applying an hourly cost model based on the results of an annotation user study, we approximate the amount of time necessary to annotate a given sentence. This model allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of AL sampling methods in terms of time spent in annotation. ...
Fine-grained sense distinctions are one of the major obstacles to successful Word Sense Disambiguation. In this paper, we present a method for reducing the granularity of the WordNet sense inventory based on the mapping to a manually crafted dictionary encoding sense hierarchies, namely the Oxford Dictionary of English. We assess the quality of the mapping and the induced clustering, and evaluate the performance of coarse WSD systems in the Senseval-3 English all-words task.
Organizational Assessment: A Framework for Improving Performance includes changes in development assistance; the enabling environment and organizational performance; organizational motivation; methodological issues in organizational assessment; implementing an organizational assessment.
In September 2002, AHRQ entered into a four-year contract with the RAND Corporation to serve as the patient safety evaluation center for its patient safety initiative. The evaluation center is responsible for performing a longitudinal evaluation of the full scope of AHRQ’s patient safety activities and for providing regular feedback to
Concerns about the cost and quality of health care have resulted in a national effort to determine the health outcomes of medical and surgical services. This report concentrates on developing criteria that risk-assessment systems should meet to permit consumers to intelligently evaluate them. It also presents a comparison of several selected mortality prediction models.......
Such assessments can provide the foundation and impetus for policy interventions. The National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) was designed to provide such information. NALS was a household survey of a nationally representative sample of 26,000 adults age 16 and older conducted by the U.S. Department of Education in 1992. It built on two prior litera
Adaptive behavior assessment system–II technical report provides a comprehensive norm-referenced assessment of the adaptive skills of individuals ages birth to 89 years. The clinician can use the ABAS–II to diagnose and classify disabilities and disorders; identify an individual’s strengths and limitations; and to document and monitor the individual’s performance over time. The ABAS–II provides for the assessment of an individual by multiple respondents (e.g.
Performance reports is a detailed statement that measures the results of some activity in terms of its success over a specific time frame. For example, an annual performance report might be produced for each employee of a business, or such a report might help management assess the success of a project or product and how well budgetary constraints were adhered to. This chapter will help students understand responsibility accounting and objective of responsibility accounting.
