  • There is little empirical evidence existing on Villa-Lobos’s career and activities between 1905 and 1912. His biographers state that he travelled widely throughout Brazil during this period. However, there are few positive facts available concerning these trips.

  • STABILITY OF PERIODIC SOLUTIONS OF FIRST-ORDER DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS LYING BETWEEN LOWER AND UPPER SOLUTIONS ALBERTO CABADA, VICTORIA OTERO-ESPINAR, ´ AND DOLORES RODRIGUEZ-VIVERO Received 8 January 2004 and in revised form 2 September 2004 We prove that if there exists α ≤ β, a pair of lower and upper solutions of the first-order discrete periodic problem ∆u(n) = f (n,u(n)); n ∈ IN ≡ {0,...,N − 1}, u(0) = u(N), with f a continuous N-periodic function in its first variable and such that x + f (n,x) is strictly increasing in x, for every n ∈ IN , then, this problem has at...

  • This study uses what Cresswell (2003) refers to as a ‘mixed methods approach’, one that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and a ‘sequential explanatory strategy’ in which the collection and analysis of the quantitative data is followed by the collection and analysis of the qualitative data (p 215).

  • Mathematics has its own language with numbers as the alphabet. The language is given structure with the aid of connective symbols, rules of operation, and a rigorous mode of thought (logic). These concepts, which previously were explored in elementary mathematics courses such as geometry, algebra, and calculus, are reviewed in the following paragraphs

  • Recent advances in clinical proteomics have propelled us into an exciting period of discovery of new cancer biomarkers, although the available proteomic technologies have their limitations. The principles of proteomic technology require stringent guidelines for the collection of clinical material, the application of analytical techniques, and for our interpretation of the data. In this review, we present an overview of the serum tumor markers in current use.

  • Until relatively recent times, most periods of technological development have been linked to changes in the use of materials (eg the stone, bronze and iron ages). In more recent years the driving force for technological change in many respects has shifted towards information technology. This is amply illustrated by the way the humble microprocessor has built intelligence into everyday domestic appliances.

  • Today, the term reliability is part of our everyday language, especially when speaking about the functionality of a product. A very reliable product is a product that fulfils its function at all times and under all operating conditions. The technical definition for reliability differs only slightly by expanding this common definition by probability: reliability is the probability that a product does not fail under given functional und environmental conditions during a defined period of time (VDI guidelines 4001).

  • Frequency Analysis Frequency analysis of any given signal involves the transformation of a time-domain signal into its frequency components. The need for describing a signal in the frequency domain exists because signal processing is generally accomplished using systems that are described in terms of frequency response. Converting the time-domain signals and systems into the frequency domain is extremely helpful in understanding the characteristics of both signals and systems. In Section 4.1, the Fourier series and Fourier transform will be introduced.

  • Consistent with the results of the Bechara study, our subjects gradually concentrated their choices on deck B (Fig. 2). The beginning phase of the task was an exploratory period in which both populations sampled each deck equally. For the next 20 draws subjects shifted towards deck B drawing on average 8 of the 20 cards from deck A. In the final 10 draws both groups largely abandoned deck A: on average the younger subjects chose deck A two times of 10 and the older subjects chose deck A three times of 10. In summary both populations appear to have adapted the same way to the payoffs....

  • In this article we study several homology theories of the algebra E ∞ (X) of Whitney functions over a subanalytic set X ⊂ Rn with a view towards noncommutative geometry. Using a localization method going back to Teleman we prove a Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg type theorem for E ∞ (X), when X is a regular subset of Rn having regularly situated diagonals. This includes the case of subanalytic X. We also compute the Hochschild cohomology of E ∞ (X) for a regular set with regularly situated diagonals and derive the cyclic and periodic cyclic theories. ...

  • Each Haas CNC machine ("Machine") and its components ("Components") (except those listed below under limits and exclusions) is warranted against defects in material and workmanship for a period of one (1) year (except TL-1s and TL-2s, which are six (6) months) from the date of purchase, which is the date that a machine is installed at the end user. The foregoing is a limited warranty and it is the only warranty by manufacturer.

  • PERIODIC BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS ON TIME SCALES ´ PETR STEHLIK Received 20 April 2004 We extend the results concerning periodic boundary value problems from the continuous calculus to time scales. First we use the Schauder fixed point theorem and the concept of lower and upper solutions to prove the existence of the solutions and then we investigate a monotone iterative method which could generate some of them.

  • Recently, Th17 cells were identified as a new subset of T helper cells unrelated to Th1 or Th2 cells. They are a subset of T helper cells characterized by IL-17 production, differentiated from naïve T cells in the presence of both transforming growth factor (TGF)-β and IL-6 in mice, and are implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) (Langrish et al. 2005).

  • We prove that the existence of an automorphism of finite order on a Q-variety X implies the existence of algebraic linear relations between the logarithm of certain periods of X and the logarithm of special values of the Γ-function. This implies that a slight variation of results by Anderson, Colmez and Gross on the periods of CM abelian varieties is valid for a larger class of CM motives. In particular, we prove a weak form of the period conjecture of Gross-Deligne [11, p. 205]1 .

  • For diffeomorphisms of smooth compact finite-dimensional manifolds, we consider the problem of how fast the number of periodic points with period n grows as a function of n. In many familiar cases (e.g., Anosov systems) the growth is exponential, but arbitrarily fast growth is possible; in fact, the first author has shown that arbitrarily fast growth is topologically (Baire) generic for C 2 or smoother diffeomorphisms.

  • In the previous sub-section we have described the evolution of yields and interest rate spreads in 2002 using weekly data. If the information revealed by policy events is processed efficiently in capital markets, it may nevertheless be necessary to look at higher frequencies to detect any impact of fiscal policy events. In this section we therefore focus more carefully on specific events using daily data. As an illustration, we select two periods for a closer look.
