Could it be that we have unfairly neglected French contributions to green
theory because of words written more than 350 years ago?1 It was a
sixteenth-century Frenchman who, in the opinion of many green thinkers,
penned the most notorious line in the history of Western philosophy. René
Descartes (1637: 40) proposed that we “make ourselves masters and possessors
of nature”2 by subjecting our material environment first to rational
analysis and then to technological control.
George Kelly launched his revolutionary ideas about the nature of being human
nearly fifty years ago upon a world ill-prepared to receive them. This book is
evidence that the value of those ideas has not only been seen by those who are
primarily academics but also by those who are primarily practitioners. And not
only by psychologists, but by those in many other walks of life.
So widespread has the interest in personal construct psychology become, that this
book does not and cannot provide a complete coverage of personal construct work
or of areas in which such work is relevant.
We acknowledge with gratitude the assistance of the following persons
who have given their time and expertise to read and comment upon
different portions of the manuscript: Froylan Castaneda (Food and
Agriculture Organization, Rome, Italy); Eleanor Jones (Environmental
In this important book, Erving Polster - coauthor of the landmark work "Gestalt Therapy Integrated" - greatly expands the therapeutic utility of the concept of self. A Population of Selves offers therapists new ways of thinking about the self, as well as specific procedures to help patients realize a powerful and healthy sense of self: a goal at the very heart of the therapeutic process. In an innovative expansion of therapeutic theory, Polster shows how the human reflex to summarize and animate experiences serves as a natural springboard for the formation of selves.
In December 2009 a large international conference on climate change
was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Among many people around the
world, plans for that conference triggered strong hopes, especially
the expectation that the lopsided and exploitative relation between
humanity and nature would be corrected or at least ameliorated. As
we know in retrospect, these hopes were not fulfi lled—although the
demand for corrective measures is steadily gaining in urgency.
If the Merit of a Natural History depends upon the Truth of the Facts which are brought to support it, then an unprejudiced Eye-Witness is more proper to write it, than any other Person; and I dare even flatter myself, that this will not be disagreeable to the Publick notwithstanding its Resemblance to the particular Treatises of Colmenero (1), Dufour (2), and several others who have wrote upon the same Subject. Upon examination, so great a Difference will appear, that no one can justly accuse me of having borrow’d any thing from these Writers....
A simple guide to help anyone on the path of self-actualization & enlightenment. We exist in humanities apex, the next fifty to one-hundred years will either define us or destroy us... personally I think the latter has a better chance, because I see no way out of the global warming issue, but I really hope I am wrong, but either way what happens really doesn’t matter in the big scope of things, for we are mere seeds adrift in the cosmic winds. With normal advances in stem cell research and a better understanding of our DNA, we will in...

Previous work on statistical language generation has primarily focused on grammaticality and naturalness, scoring generation possibilities according to a language model or user feedback. More recent work has investigated data-driven techniques for controlling linguistic style without overgeneration, by reproducing variation dimensions extracted from corpora. Another line of work has produced handcrafted rule-based systems to control specific stylistic dimensions, such as politeness and personality. ...
The system is Collaborative with free interaction and not guided. Users can ask any question to the system, when and how they want to, using their own everyday words and phrases, just as if they were talking to another person. AGORA it's been used successfully in a wide range of information services in which customers have been able to communicate with a presential or remote machine monitored by this system. Moreover AGORA has the possibility of incorporating new services since it's a platform of association, composed by a Kernel and an increasing amount of modules or subdialogues. ...
We explore the problem of resolving the second person English pronoun you in multi-party dialogue, using a combination of linguistic and visual features. First, we distinguish generic and referential uses, then we classify the referential uses as either plural or singular, and finally, for the latter cases, we identify the addressee. In our first set of experiments, the linguistic and visual features are derived from manual transcriptions and annotations, but in the second set, they are generated through entirely automatic means.
In this paper, we describe experiments conducted on identifying a person using a novel unique correlated corpus of text and audio samples of the person’s communication in six genres. The text samples include essays, emails, blogs, and chat. Audio samples were collected from individual interviews and group discussions and then transcribed to text. For each genre, samples were collected for six topics.
In its current status, ITS-2 translates French sentences into English or English into French over a still restricted vocabulary of approximately 3'000 bilingual entries. The main objectives of this project are (i) to show some of the advantages of interactive approaches to NL translation, (ii) to demonstrate the merits of generative grammar as a syntactic model for MT, (iii) to show the feasibility of personal translation on small personal computers (under MS-Windows).
The global population of persons aged 60
and over is rising dramatically – especially
in regions that experience the greatest risks
of natural or conflict-related emergencies.
Headlines of the plight of older persons
during the European heat wave of 2003
and Hurricane Katrina in the USA in 2005
shocked the world. In developing countries,
their situation is generally much less
widely-known and their needs and contributions
have been largely invisible. But
this is changing.
Chapter 48: The nature of property, Personal property, and bailments. After studying this chapter you will be able to understand: What are the classifications of property? How is personal property transferred? What are the rights and responsibilities of parties to a bailment?
Today I received a newsletter from Oxford announcing a special 50 Natural English Tips. So I found this truly original and motivating material. I believe both students and teachers will enjoy the colorful look and the fast-pacing presentation of the content. I have been using Natural English Elementary with one three-student group and they like the book and the listenings in the CD. Now I hope I can make my classes even better by using this material. Take a look at the special material: 50 Natural English Tips. You might enjoy the book site, too. Personally, I like to use...
Business and commercial enterprise takes place within a legal context and, in the final
analysis, is governed and regulated by law. One of the problems facing the person
studying business activity, and the one that is specifically addressed in this book, is
the fact that business enterprise takes place within a general and wide-ranging legal
environment, but the student is required to have more than a passing knowledge of
the legal rules and procedures which impact on business activity.
