Over the past decade, executives have witnessed an explosion of management tools
such as Customer Relationship Management, Scenario and Contingency Planning,
and the Balanced Scorecard. Demands of increasing competition in the global
marketplace are driving the explosion, while accelerated, lower-cost delivery systems
for ideas and information have enabled it. Today the sheer volume of ideas can
overwhelm a management team.
I have written this book to support the HR professional who is
in dedicated pursuit of recruitment excellence. By definition, mediocrity
is the norm. The word mediocre is derived from the Latin
word mediocris meaning ‘‘middle.’’ Those who pursue excellence
are not satisfied with the middle. They are dedicated to rising
above the commonplace to soar with eagles.
Preface to the New Edition The ﬁrst edition of this book appeared in 1946. Eight translations were made of it, and there were numerous paperback editions. In a paperback of 1961, a new chapter was added on rent control, which had not been speciﬁcally considered in the ﬁrst edition apart from government price-ﬁxing in general. A few statistics and illustrative references were brought up to date. Otherwise no changes were made until now. The chief reason was that they were not thought necessary.
