  • This report was originally released in December 2004 in prepublication form as the first report of a two-phase study to be carried out by the same committee. The first phase was sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and focused on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The second phase was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and focused on the Global Precipitation Measurement mission. The report of the second phase will be published in a separate volume in 2006.

  • A new automated procedure for preconcentration and analysis of anionic surfactants in water using solid-phase extraction (SPE) in a flow injection (Fl) system together with an UV-vis detection is reported in this paper. The method involves extraction of blue coloured ion-pair complex of anionic surfactants and methylene blue into solid phase and their elution from the SPE column with organic solvent (chloroform stabilised with methanol) and subsequent measurement in an UV-vis flow cell at 650 nm. The system is well optimised before to apply for analysis of real samples.

  • This paper pro -poses two ideas for adapting standard kinematic techniques to situations that do not naturally allow for the constraint of a fixed baseline. The first calls for extracting the information needed to resolve the integer ambiguity from the very data collected while the kinematic survey is in progress. The second idea addresses the use of the antenna exchange technique for mobile platforms where the original locations of the antennas are not likely to remain stationary during the physical exchange.

  • The conservatism of the early English colonists in North America, their strong attachment to the English way of doing things, would play a major part in the furniture that was made in New England. The very tools that the first New England furniture makers used were, after all, not much different from those used for centuries – even millennia: basic hammers, saws, chisels, planes, augers, compasses, and measures. These were the tools used more or less by all people who worked with wood: carpenters, barrel makers, and shipwrights. ...

  • Electricity is an invisible force that is used to transfer energy into heat, light, intelligence, or motion. Electricity is explained in terms of electrical charge, potential differ- ence (or voltage), electrical charge flow (or current), and resistance to current flow. Figure 1-1 graphically illus- trates electron flow through a conductor by comparing it with water flow through a pipe. The normal unit of current measurement is the ampere, whereas the normal unit of voltage measurement is the volt. The unit of opposition to current flow, or resistance, is the ohm...

  • Any value that you'll run across as an engineer will either be unitless or, more commonly, will have specific types of units attached to it. In order to solve a problem effectively, all the types of units should be consistent with each other, or should be in the same system. A system of units defines each of the basic unit types with respect to some measurement that can be easily duplicated, so that for example 5 ft. is the same length in Australia as it is in the United States. There are five commonly-used base unit types or dimensions that one might encounter (shown with their...

  • Put options granted to non-controlling interests of subsidiaries are measured at the exercise price and classified as a financial liability, with a deduction from non-controlling interests on the consolidated statement of financial position at each reporting date.Prior to January 1, 2010, the effective date of IAS 27 (Amended) Consolidated and separate financial statements, where the exercise price exceeded the balance of non-controlling interests, the difference was recognized as an increase in the goodwill of the subsidiary.

  • Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) plays a key role in high precision navigation, positioning, timing, and scientific questions related to precise positioning. This is a highly precise, continuous, all-weather, and real-time technique. The book is devoted to presenting recent results and developments in GNSS theory, system, signal, receiver, method, and errors sources, such as multipath effects and atmospheric delays

  • Patterns of particle emission are different from those of the other pollutants included in the first phase of the EU Framework Directive because of their extreme diversity of origin and source, both primary and secondary, natural and anthropogenic, and there are significant differences in levels between Member States and regions within states. The limited amount of reliable PM10 data makes it difficult to establish a comprehensive overview of PM10 concentrations and trends in Member States.

  • The committee was tasked to determine the best instrumentation and procedures for measuring BFD (see Box S-1). To do this, it reviewed technical specifications, viewed demonstrations of the operation and use of current and prospective systems, and evaluated factors such as human handling variability, process transparency, and software variability judgment. The committee found that given the current clay variation, a measurement precision (standard deviation) of 0.5 mm is sufficient; instruments featuring greater precision add little practical value to the testing process.

  • An output of one step will be the input to another. Some inputs may be sourced from outside the project. These External Inputs (e.g., Standards, Project Initiation report of another project, etc.) must be identified. The project products and external inputs will primarily determine the step dependencies. Define the dependencies, and dependency type, between the steps. Steps within a stage are not necessarily finish-start, but may be in parallel or phased. Stages may also run in parallel with one another. Do not specify dependencies at the stage level.

  • In this paper we present the implementation of a digital lock-in amplifier (LIA) completely based on Labview with a general-purpose data acquisition board (or a high quality sound card) and a high-gain low-noise amplifier. The signal analysis is processed by the software. We describe some characteristics of the LIA including output voltage vs. frequency and output phase vs. noise. The LIA can be used to measure the small signals, even in presence of broadband noise which is several times greater than the signal itself. Since the signal processing takes place on the computer, ...

Secondary goals include creating a guideline suitable for deriving a performance measure on rhinosinusitis and training participants in guide- line methodology to facilitate future development efforts.

Air change rates in the house, which was operated at a single defined condition for all the sampling periods, were affected by wind speed and temperature conditions. At low wind speed conditions (wind speed

  • There has been much discussion in recent months concerning who might be included in the population of “vulnerable” residents. The term “vulnerable” has most often been used interchangeably with the term “special needs.” In the most broad sense as related to disaster management, the vulnerable population refers to those individuals who do not feel they can adequately access the resources they need during all four phases of a disaster: preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.
