Traditionally astrophysics has concerned itself with minimum time-scales measured
in hours rather than seconds. This was understandable as the available recording
media were slow; e.g. chart recorders and photographic plates. In the 1950s, 60s
and 70s wavebands away from the optical were developed; from ground based
radio studies to space and balloon borne high energy work. In contrast to optical
wavelengths instrumentation in these (high and low energy) regimes was capable
of time resolutions of less than a second....
The Observatory's suite of technical equipment is complemented by a Library and Archives that is one
of the premier specialist collections of its kind in the UK and Ireland. The library, archives and museum
collection together comprise a unique and growing collection of historic books and manuscripts, as well as
images, photographic plates, scientic instruments, clocks and other artefacts concerning the development
of astronomy in the UK and Ireland over more than two hundred years. These rank amongst the leading
collections of their kind in the UK and Ireland.
The collection of photographs from which the plates in this and the February number were selected was only recently made under the direction of Signor Boni, an official of the Italian government, charged with the care and restoration of historic monuments. The province of Apulia has been so little invaded by the march of modern improvement, and its present inhabitants are, as a rule, so poor, that it is difficult to travel here except on the line of a few main thoroughfares, and strangers seldom visit more than one or two of the principal towns on the coast.
