  • The physical basis of color exists in the interaction of light with matter, both outside and inside the eye. The sensation of color depends on physiological activity in the visual system that begins with the absorption of light in photoreceptors located in the retina of the eye and ends with patterns of biochemical activity in the brain. Perceived color can be described by the color names white, gray, black, yellow, orange, brown, red, green, blue, purple, and pink. These 11 basic color terms have unambiguous referents in all fully developed languages.

  • The Editor of the Theosophical Forum in April, 1901, noted the death of Mr. Thomas E. Willson in the previous month in an article which we reproduce for the reason that we believe many readers who have been following the chapters of "Ancient and Modern Physics" during the last year will like to know something of the author. In these paragraphs is said all that need be said of one of our most devoted and understanding Theosophists. In March, 1901, The Theosophical Forum lost one of its most willing and unfailing contributors. Mr. T.E.

  • The ‘electronic book’ is a feature of this early 21st Century. I have been in academic life for several decades, and have I hope responded with flexibility to changes over that time. I have been using a word processor on a daily basis for twenty years and am deeply conscious of the advantages over even the most advanced typewriters. The first time I gave a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint was in India about six years ago. I have with enthusiasm used PowerPoint for every invited talk or conference contribution I have given since....

  • This introduction to nuclear physics provides an excellent basis for a core undergraduate course in this area. The authors show how simple models can provide an understanding of the properties of nuclei, both in their ground and excited states, and of the nature of nuclear reactions. They include chapters on nuclear fission, its application in nuclear power reactors, the role of nuclear physics in energy production and nucleosynthesis in stars.

  • Magnetism often has a slight overtone of being mysterious. This is probably caused by the surprisingly strong forces between magnets which everybody can experience with magnetic toys, magnet boards, or similar objects. A strange effect is the unique ability of magnetic fields to penetrate many substances without any attenuation. Though the physical basis of magnetism is well explored, the outsider usually does not know very much about the details and sometimes tends to overestimate the real possibilities provided by magnetism.

  • Nine years has passed since the 1992 second edition of the encyclopedia was published. This completely revised third edition, which is a university and professional level compendium of chemistry, molecular biology, mathematics, and engineering, is refreshed with numerous articles about current research in these fields. For example, the new edition has an increased emphasis on information processing and biotechnology, reflecting the rapid growth of these areas.

  • Cerium, an element in the lanthanide series, has a number of radioactive isotopes. Several of these are produced in abundance in nuclear fission reactions associated with nuclear industry operations or detonation of nuclear devices. This report summarizes our present knowledge of the relevant physical, chemical, and biological properties of radiocerium as a basis for establishing radiation protection guidelines.

  • This fourth revised edition of “Technical Basis of Radiation Therapy: Practical Clinical Applications”, edited by S. H. Levitt, J. A. Purdy, C. A. Perez, and S. Vijaykumar, continues this publication’s outstanding excellence in the definition of the technical advances for radiation therapy. The previous three editions were milestones in the definition of new technologies and how they would be applied in clinical practice.

  • Innovation in engineering often means the clever use of a new material - new to a particular application, but not necessarily (although sometimes) new in the sense of ‘recently developed’. Plastic paper clips and ceramic turbine-blades both represent attempts to do better with polymers and ceramics what had previously been done well with metals. And engineering disasters are frequently caused by the misuse of materials.

  • An interesting aspect of Fluid Mechanics is the often surprising connection betwee seemingly disparate problems. The similarity between radionuclide migration an wood charring may not be immediately obvious, but the radial basis functio approach described in the next chapter underscores the connection between the two In these problems, the interface between the fluid and the solid boundary changes i time according to events within the fluid.

  • I was pleased to respond to Ventus Publishing to write a textbook (which is split into 3 more manageable books, “Chemistry Maths 1”, “Chemistry Maths 2”, and “Chemistry Maths 3” which should be studied in sequence) that would help Chemistry students survive, and even enjoy, the Maths required for a Chemistry degree. I developed and presented tutorials on Maths to our first year Chemistry students over several years at the Chemistry Department, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. These tutorials have formed the basis for this workbook.

  • The forty-fourth volume of this series contains eight reviews written by an international array of authors that, as usual, range widely in subject and taxonomic and geographic coverage. The editors welcome suggestions from potential authors for topics they consider could form the basis of future appropriate contributions. Because an annual publication schedule necessarily places constraints on the timetable for submission, evaluation and acceptance of manuscripts, potential contributors are advised to contact the editors at an early stage of preparation.

  • Perhaps quantum mechanics is viewed as the most remarkable development in 20th century physics. Each successful theory is exclusively concerned about "results of measurement". Quantum mechanics point of view is completely different from classical physics in measurement, because in microscopic world of quantum mechanics, a direct measurement as classical form is impossible. Therefore, over the years of developments of quantum mechanics, always challenging part of quantum mechanics lies in measurements.

  • Much has changed in the 3 years since the first edition of this book. The physics of heat, light, sound and energy is still the same, so there is little change in the first three parts. Apart from the correction of a few errors, a few new developments are mentioned, some new methods are included and statistics updated. Part 4 has many new elements that reflect societal changes, especially changes in public attitudes. Three years ago there were many who denied global warming or who regarded renewable energy technologies as ‘ kids ’ stuff ’. Today only a few of these survive.

In trademark application documents, Yasakawa defined mechatronics in this way: The word mechatronics is composed of “mecha” from mechanism and the “tronics” from electronics.
