  • Public health officials have long been concerned about the effect of the environment on human health. In the nineteenth century, public health efforts in the United States were focused on controlling the spread of infectious disease, and advances in sanitation and the provision of clean water contributed to improvements in the health of the population.

  • This edition of Optical Metrology contains a new chapter about computerized optical processes, including digital holography and digital speckle photography. Chapter 2, on Gaussian optics, and Chapter 5, on light sources and detectors, are greatly expanded to include descriptions of standard imaging systems, light-emitting diodes and solid-state detectors. Separate new sections on optical coherence tomography, speckle correlation, the Fast Fourier Transform, temporal phase unwrapping and fibre Bragg sensors are included. Finally, a new appendix about Fourier series is given.

  • The chemistry of fine organic intermediates and products shows an enormous diversity. But in reality, the number of operations/processes used remains reasonably small. These include charging/discharging of reactants and solvents, inertisation, reactions, crystallisations, phase separations, filtrations, distillation, product washing. In many cases cooling, heating, or the application of vacuum or pressure is necessary. The unavoidable waste streams are treated in recovery/abatement systems or disposed of as waste.

  • In recognition of the importance of establishing gender equality around the world, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) was established as a separate fund within the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 1984. At that time, the General Assembly instructed it to “ensure women’s involvement with mainstream activities.”3 The Platform of Action resulting from the 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women expanded this concept, calling it “gender mainstreaming”—i.e.

  • A new procedure for calculation and analysis of dispersion relation and real atomic vibration of fcc crystals containing dopant atom has been developed using anharmonic effective potential. Analytical expressions for dispersion relation separated by acoustic and optical branches; forbidden zone; effective force constant; Debye frequency and temperature; amplitude and phase of real vibration of atomic chain containing dopant atom have been derived. They contain Morse potential parameters characterizing vibration of each pair of atoms. ...

  • A horizon is perspectival. There are no horizons without perceivers. One sense of the word 'environment' has that logic, noticing the modifiers. My environment is rather like my horizon. I take it with me as I move through the world. Horizons require an attention span. Analogously, my environment has an owner. We can spell this 'environment' with a lower case e. Arnold Berleant concludes: 'This is what environment means: a fusion of organic awareness, of meanings both conscious and unaware, of geographical location, of physical presence, personal time, pervasive movement. . .

  • St. Albans, Vermont is near the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, and only a short distance south of "Five-and-forty north degrees" which separates the United States from Canada, and some sixty or seventy miles from the great St. Lawrence River and the city of Montreal. Near here it was, on April 6th, 1820, I was born, so the record says, and from this point with wondering eyes of childhood I looked across the waters of the narrow lake to the slopes of the Adirondack mountains in New York, green as the hills of my own Green Mountain State. • The practice of medicine has a long tradition of making a diagnosis by building up a composite picture of the symptoms and their history, a clinical examination and specialist investigations. A diagnosis enables the course of the disease to be predicted and the appropriate treatment used. However, scientific developments in genetics, by allowing us to detect specific abnormalities in chromosomes and in individual genes, are beginning to throw light on the mechanisms involved at a biochemical and molecular level.

  • In July of 1994, Comet Shoemaker-Levy struck the planet Jupiter, depositing 7 × 1022 joules of energy, and incidentally giving rise to a series of Hollywood movies in which our own planet is threatened by an impact by a comet or asteroid. There is evidence that such an impact caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Left: Jupiter’s gravitational force on the near side of the comet was greater than on the far side, and this difference in force tore up the comet into a string of fragments.

  • While speech recognition systems have come a long way in the last thirty years, there is still room for improvement. Although readily available, these systems are sometimes inaccurate and insufficient. The research presented here outlines a technique called Distributed Listening which demonstrates noticeable improvements to existing speech recognition methods. The Distributed Listening architecture introduces the idea of multiple, parallel, yet physically separate automatic speech recognizers called listeners. Distributed Listening also uses a piece of middleware called an interpreter.
