This cross-disciplinary book documents the key research challenges in the mathematical sciences and physics that could enable the economical development of novel biomedical imaging devices. It is hoped that the infusion of new insights from mathematical scientists and physicists will accelerate progress in imaging.
A Public Health Perspective of Women’s Mental Health examines major issues in
the organization, financing, and provision of women’s mental health services. It also
presents an overview of the epidemiology of mental disorders across the lifespan
of women, an in-depth discussion of selected mental and substance use disorders
that particularly affect women, and includes an examination of emerging issues in
women’s mental health.
The vacuum is fast emerging as the central structure of modern physics. This collection brings together philosophically-minded specialists who engage these issues in the context of classical gravity, quantum electrodynamics, and the grand unification program. The vacuum emerges as the synthesis of concepts of space, time, and matter; in the context of relativity and the quantum this new synthesis represents a structure of the most intricate and novel complexity.

The first edition of the
Handbook of Micro/Nanotribology
was published in the Spring of 1995. Soon after
its publication, the first-of-a-kind monograph became a reference book for the novice, as well as experts,
in the emerging field of micro/nanotribology. Since the field is evolving very rapidly, we felt that the
monograph needed a second edition.
The second edition is totally revised. The scope of the first edition has been expanded. In the first
part, Basic Studies, two new chapters on AFM Instrumentation and Tips and Surface Forces and Adhesion
have been added.
The first edition of the Protection Officer
Training Manual(POTM) originated with
the birth of the International Foundation for
Protection Offi cers (IFPO) in 1988. Twelve dedi-cated security professionals from the United
States and Canada had a vision: to create an
organization that would provide meaningful
career opportunities for line security officers
throughout North America
Performing experiments in low Earth orbit has been the focus of much of the research funded by
NASA’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD) and its predecessors for over 30 years. This microgravity
research can be divided into five broad areas, all of which focus primarily on phenomena that are
strongly perturbed by gravity: biotechnology, combustion, fluid physics, fundamental physics, and
Legend has it that the first diamonds were found in India 8,000 years ago along the Penner, Krishna and
Godavari rivers. Prized for their physical qualities, diamonds were used to decorate religious icons and as
engraving and polishing tools. From early on, they were associated with wealth, status and well-being.
Historians believe the international diamond trade began about 1,000 years ago when traders began
transporting rough stones from India across Arabia. The stones were cut and polished before being sold on
the European continent to royalty and aristocrats.
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are an emerging research topic born from the
ever increasing complexity of engineered systems. Future systems will have to
interact with each other and with the physical world in a very tight and well
coordinated fashion, and designing such systems is the research challenge behind
CPSs. CPSs have been defined as “computational thinking and integration of com
putation around the physical dynamic systems where sensing, decision, actuation,
computation, networking, and physical processes are mixed”.
The fields of biological and medical physics and biomedical engineering are
broad, multidisciplinary and dyanmic. They lie at the crossroads of frontier research
in physics, biology, chemistry, and medicine. The Biological & Medical
Physics/Biomedical Engineering Series is intended to be comprehensive,
covering a broad range of topics important to the study of the physical, chemical
and biological sciences. Its goal is to provide scientists and engineers with
textbooks, monographs, and reference works to address the growing need for
Access to library materials and services, on one dimension, is represented in the location
of physical facilities. Because libraries are traveled-to outlets, marketing location theories can be
applied successfully to library siting. (Wood and Koontz)
accountability Libraries like private sector businesses are increasingly called upon to make all
units accountable for results. Growing funds are needed for technology as opposed to only
books. Funders often cut the library budget first, in favor of other agencies such as police and
fire or other seemingly, more necessary agencies.
The presence of amnesia (which in
psychoanalytic theories is posited to have the role of covering the unfortunate past) might,
however, pose a significant challenge to clinicians trying to identify the precipitating
stressful events. Furthermore some cases of dissociative (psychogenic) amnesia did not
occur as a result of an objective major psychological stressor, but were recorded after a
seemingly objective minor stress (Staniloiu et al., 2009).
There are two types of “combustion explosions”, i.e. deflagrations and detonations. There are other types of
“explosions”, e.g. “physical explosions” of vessels by overpressure above the established limit due to overfill,
as a result of runaway reaction, etc. The word “explosion” is rather a jargon and we will avoid applying it
in this book where possible. Sometimes the use of term “explosion” could generate misunderstanding. For
example, some standards do introduce wrongly from author’s point of view so-called “explosion limit”.
This chapter provides a review of the issues
involved in accounting for renewable and envi-
ronmental resources. It is not intended to be a
comprehensive review ofwork in this area. Rather,
it delineates the issues that are involved in envi-
ronmental accounting and presents two important
specific examples that illustrate these issues. The
first section reviews BEA’s efforts in environmental
accounting to date.
Palliative Care: The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of a seriously ill
person’s life, and to support the patient and family when faced with terminal illness.
This includes managing physical symptoms, assessing psychological and spiritual needs,
patient support system and discharge planning issues. Palliative care is part of hospice
care, but it can begin any time during a patient’s illness. A team approach to palliative care
is optimal, with the primary care provider and social services playing an active role.
The study of psychological processes in physical activity and health has grown
considerably in recent years. “Exercise psychologists” study the psychological antecedents
of physical activity and use their theoretical perspectives to inform the design and implementation
of interventions to change sedentary lifestyles. In addition, involvement in
physical activity can have important psychological benefits. Although we have known
this for a very long time, it is only relatively recently that a systematic approach has been
adopted to the accumulation of evidence.
Information technology is poised on the brink of transforming healthcare. IT
is entwined with the continuing evolution of the molecular and physical sciences,
and rather than dehumanizing us, IT has the potential to continually
transform healthcare by the power of its information sharing and processing
capabilities. IT particularly has the power to restore good aspects of healthcare
based on a personalized and holistic approach, which has been progressively
lost, and increasingly so since the Industrial Revolution and the escalating
patient - to - physician ratios of the last century...
Because of the topographic setting of the city, the moderately strong insolation associated
with its tropical latitude and high elevation, and weak prevailing synoptic winds, Mexico City is
strongly affected by thermally and topographically induced circulation patterns.
In recent years, technology has revolutionized the practice of surgery. As
part of this change, surgeon-performed ultrasound has become one of the
most integral parts of the surgeon’s clinical practice. It is not surprising to
observe this current surge of interest in ultrasound by general surgeons because
surgeons are highly motivated to provide the best possible care for
their patients, including the use of the latest technologic advances in diagnosis
