The present book is a collection of ten original research articles and reports, associated with selected topics in agricultural chemistry. The discussed issues are organized in four sections: Classification and labeling of active substances in plant protection products, Environmental and stress plant physiology and behavior, Antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of plant extracts, and Pollutants analysis and effects. The information provided in this book should be of interest for academic researchers and for agriculturalists....

This book is about the conservation of genetic diversity of wild plants in situ in their natural surroundings, primarily in existing protected areas but also outside conventional protected areas. A lot of effort has been dedicated to conserving plant biodiversity, but most of this has focused on rare plant communities or individual species threatened with extinction.

The urgent need to ensure the conservation of biological diversity is now widely recognised, but the role of an intellectual property rights regime as an instrument for biodiversity conservation is poorly understood and often hotly debated. This volume is a detailed analysis of the economic and scientific rationales for the use of a property rights-based approach to biodiversity conservation. It discusses the justification for, and implemen- tation of, intellectual property rights regimes as incentive systems to encourage conservation.

The engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, and others.

As rates of deforestation and land degradation, and losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services, continue to rise globally, the international community is faced with the challenge of finding land use interventions that can mitigate or reduce the impact of these environmental issues. Agroforestry, the integration of trees in farming systems, has the potential for providing rural livelihoods and habitats for species outside formally protected lands, connecting nature reserves, and alleviating resourceuse pressure on conservation areas.

Since the 1930s, the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Forest Service’s International Institute of Tropical Forestry (the Institute) has studied mahogany and its management. In the 1960s, F.B. Lamb, the author of the classic book on mahogany (1966), was an Institute collaborator. Before gene flow and genetic erosion became popular terms, my predecessor Frank Wadsworth established a gene bank at the Luquillo Experimental Forest.

Sodium concentration in irrigation water replaces calcium by the process of Base Exchange, therefore reduces soil permeability. Furthermore, excess salinity in groundwater used for irrigation decreased plants osmotic activity and interfere water absorption and nutrients from the soil. Nearly 5% of groundwater from the study site exceeds the desirable limit (1000 mg L-1) of chloride. The natural source of chloride is due to the weathering of phosphate mineral apatite present in granites.

The concept of 'biotech' or 'biotechnology' encompasses a wide range of procedures (and history) for modifying living organisms according to human purposes — going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of plants, and "improvements" to these through breeding programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization. Modern usage also includes genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies.

This short book is about conserving insects, the most diverse and abundant animals that share our world. In particular, it is about the common focus of conserving individual species of insects. This so-called ‘fine filter’ (or ‘fine grain’) level of conservation parallels much conservation effort for better-understood groups of animals such as mammals and birds, for which species-focused conservation exercises are commonplace.

Genetic diversity is the fundamental source of biodiversity. In 1989, the World Wildlife Fund defined biodiversity as “the richness of life on Earth – millions of plants, animals and microorganisms, including the genes which they carry, and complex ecosystems that create the environment”. Currently, the issue of maintaining genetic diversity as a component of the conservation of biodiversity has been accepted at an international level. FAO has included the issue of conservation, evaluation, and the use of animal genetic resources in its fields of interest since the 1970s.

Lenne, 1996) and to decrease damage by pests and pathogens (Cantelo & Sanford, 1984). In some crops (e.g. rice) this is applied on a large scale to maximize yield by minimizing damage by pathogens (Zhu et al., 2000). Information on genetic diversity and population structure also assists plant breeding in the selection of parents for crossing, providing a more rational basis for expanding the gene pool, and for identifying materials that harbor genes of value for plant improvement.
