This report originated in 1999 as a result of discussions between the Committee on
Solar and Space Physics (CSSP) and officials within NASA’s Office of Space Science Sun-
Earth Connections program. As noted in the statement of task (Appendix A), the objective
of the study was to provide a scientific assessment and strategy for the study of
magnetized plasmas in the solar system. By emphasizing the connections between
locally occurring (solar system) structures and processes and their astrophysical counterparts,
the study would contribute to a unified view of cosmic plasma behavior.
The Committee on High Energy Density Plasma Physics was established in April
2001 by the National Research Council’s (NRC’s) Board on Physics and Astronomy
to identify scientific opportunities and develop a unifying theme for research on
matter under extreme high energy density conditions.
The drug concentration inside multidrug-resistant cells is the outcome of
competition between the active export of drugs by drug efflux pumps, such
as P-glycoprotein (Pgp), and the passive permeation of drugs across the
plasma membrane. Thus, reversal of multidrug resistance (MDR) can occur
either by inhibition of the efflux pumps or by acceleration of the drug per-meation.
In recent years many efforts have been devoted to the search for the Quark
Gluon Plasma, a new, deconfined phase of hadronic matter, through ultrarelativistic
heavy ion collisions. In 1986 the Alternate Gradient Synchrotron
in Brookhaven started accelerating nuclei, thus beginning the Era of high
energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. Since then, many experiments developed,
with increasing luminosity and energy of the ion beams: the Large Hadron
Collider, expected to be completed by 2007 at CERN will allow to study
Pb-Pb collisions at y/s ~ 5.5 TeV/nucleon....
This book consists of a selection of original papers of the leading scientists in the fields of Space and Planetary Physics, Solar and Space Plasma Physics with important contributions to the theory, modeling and experimental techniques of the solar wind exploration.
