The Earth’s polar regions (see Figure 1.1) are ecologically, economically,
and, increasingly, geopolitically important; they are particularly
vulnerable to the speed and magnitude of climate change and
have significant potential to influence the global climate system (Oreskes,
2004; IPCC, 2007a; Anderegg et al., 2010). Climate models and observational
data have shown that polar regions have warmed at substantially
higher rates than the global mean (IPCC, 2007c).
Joint sentiment-topic (JST) model was previously proposed to detect sentiment and topic simultaneously from text. The only supervision required by JST model learning is domain-independent polarity word priors. In this paper, we modify the JST model by incorporating word polarity priors through modifying the topic-word Dirichlet priors.

Polarity classiﬁcation of words is important for applications such as Opinion Mining and Sentiment Analysis. A number of sentiment word/sense dictionaries have been manually or (semi)automatically constructed. The dictionaries have substantial inaccuracies. Besides obvious instances, where the same word appears with different polarities in different dictionaries, the dictionaries exhibit complex cases, which cannot be detected by mere manual inspection.
Automatically identifying the polarity of words is a very important task in Natural Language Processing. It has applications in text classiﬁcation, text ﬁltering, analysis of product review, analysis of responses to surveys, and mining online discussions. This paper proposes a generic mathematical formalism for the combination of various structures: strings, trees, dags, graphs and products of them. The polarization of the objects of the elementary structures controls the saturation of the final structure. This paper proposes a novel method of building polarity-tagged corpus from HTML documents. The characteristics of this method is that it is fully automatic and can be applied to arbitrary HTML documents. The idea behind our method is to utilize certain layout structures and linguistic pattern. By using them, we can automatically extract such sentences that express opinion. In our experiment, the method could construct a corpus consisting of 126,610 sentences.
We present a classiﬁer to predict contextual polarity of subjective phrases in a sentence. Our approach features lexical scoring derived from the Dictionary of Affect in Language (DAL) and extended through WordNet, allowing us to automatically score the vast majority of words in our input avoiding the need for manual labeling. We present an extensive study on the problem of detecting polarity of words. We consider the polarity of a word to be either positive or negative. For example, words such as good, beautiful, and wonderful are considered as positive words; whereas words such as bad, ugly, and sad are considered negative words.
