  • Since the 1945 publication of Vannevar Bush’s Science—The Endless Frontier, the federal government has played the predominant role in supporting research and development (R&D) and in establishing public policies that affect science and technology (S&T) in the United States. That role remains vitally important today. Almost every major policy issue is influenced by scientific and technological information and expertise. There remains a clear and ongoing mandate for a cohesive set of federal policy and programs that both sustain R&D and promote the application of new knowledge....

  • Air Travel and High-Altitude Destinations Commercial air travel is not a risk to the healthy pregnant woman or to the fetus. The higher radiation levels reported at altitudes of 10,500 m (35,000 ft) should pose no problem to the healthy pregnant traveler. Since each airline has a policy regarding pregnancy and flying, it is best to check with the specific carrier when booking reservations. Domestic air travel is usually permitted until the 36th week, whereas international air travel is generally curtailed after the 32nd week.

  • The prominence of private health insurance has been buttressed by government interventions directed at PHI markets in several OECD health systems, although the effectiveness of policies aimed at increasing market size and fostering outcome quality has differed widely. Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and the United States have promoted and maintained a large and viable private health insurance market because policy makers have concluded that mixed public-private coverage systems can better deliver desired health policy and social outcomes.

  • Before working on consumption, WWF looked at the existing advice about food choices. We saw that this was already a very crowded area and we didn’t want to add to the maelstrom of information. We had already noticed that the environmental ’hotspots’ had much in common with the health ones. In an attempt to bring some of these messages together, we decided to look at current governmental eating advice – the Eatwell plate – and to see how it could be adapted to include the environment. The idea was to produce a definition of a sustainable diet that is nutritionally...

  • The private bond market remains much smaller than that for the government. The outstanding issuance of corporate bonds has risen to almost 10 percent of GDP in 2011, but the market is still very concentrated in short duration rates, with a limited investor base and less diversified issuers. This suggests that the private fixed income market is not a significant long-term financing source for non-financial corporations. Indexation: Around 90 percent of private bonds are linked to the DI rate, resulting in little incentive for active trading.

  • Emission inventories play a dual role in global air pollution issues. Firstly, they can be used directly to establish the more important source categories, to identify trends in emissions and to examine the impact of different policy approaches. Secondly, emission inventories are used to drive atmospheric models applied to assess the environmental consequences of changing trace gas emissions and concentrations and to provide advice to policy makers. This second role contributes to the atmospheric modelling community being an important user of emission inventories.

  • These studies are all interconnected. For the market and financial studies, the promoter may appoint economic advisers because a major problem to be resolved is how large should the project be (in terms of output or capacity) and whether it would be economic to phase the construction in stages. The feasibility studies will need to investigate different options for provid- ing the output, to ascertain how practicable it is to adopt phased construction, and what difference this would cause to capital outlays and their timing.

  • The rst thing that most graduate students do is they rush to the literature to see if someone else had this idea already. However, my advice is to wait a bit before you look at the literature. Eventually you should do a thorough literature review, of course, but I think that you will do much better if you work on your idea for a few weeks before doing a systematic literature search. There are several reasons for delay.

Jenny Routledge initiated the cross-school Women’s Health Initiative at the University of East Anglia, whose members undertook the stimulating discussions, activities and conferences which led to most of the chapters herein. Robbie Meehan provided excellent support for those activities, so that they were always well run and recorded; her co-ordination was essential in getting the book underway.

  • Because CHWs hold the esteem of their peers, they are effective in promoting change and challenging stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, harmful traditional practices, and prejudices against family planning. They are motivated by a sense of duty to care for others around them and many were caring for others long before they received Pathfinder’s training. The training enables them to offer a wider range of services, gives them confidence that they are giving correct advice, and teaches them how to safely care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

  • The genuine saving indicator marks a step forward by the Bank to move away from simple GDP per capita calculations and introduce some human and environmental considerations into mainstream national accounting. Because of its simple and striking nature it looks set to be a major factor in key Bank documents and policy advice. Perhaps it will even become the figure which represents the combined total of the two sides of the “national balance sheet” outlined in Wolfensohn’s CDF proposal. However, it suffers from flawed data and methodology.
