  • A new Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Board was appointed in May 2010. It was tasked with the downsizing the RBZ’s huge staff complement; restoring the RBZ’s position as the lender of last resort; and putting in place committees for monetary policy and audit. About 1,455 staff of the RBZ (75% of total staff) were retrenched in January 2011 in the largest such exercise since independence. In addition, the RBZ is disposing of its non-core assets in sectors such as mining, consistent with the RBZ Act.

  • Pollution control policy is fundamental for our analysis. In 1982 the central government imposed a system of levies on air pollutants, on total wastewater, and on the concentrations of three pollutants contained in wastewater: total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, and other solids. The first two are characteristic of the paper industry. The levy rates were reassessed in 1989 and increased in 1992. Wang et al. (1996) examined the effect of these charges on the effluents on the general manufacturing sector. They found the expected emission-reducing effect.

  • The kind of transfers granted depends on the severity of the frailty (care level) and the type of care arrangements chosen (by family members, care providers or in a nursing home). Persons requiring home care can thus either draw lump-sum transfers (Geldleistung), in-kind transfers (Sachleistung), or a combination of both. Only lump-sum transfers can be claimed for nursing home care. German legislation assigns priority to home care over nursing home care and the LTC insurance is expected to continue supporting patients being cared for at home for as long as possible.

Consistent with the explicit advantages associated with non-executive directors, as set out in the various UK corporate governance codes, our basic hypothesis maintains that, in the presence of director fixed effects, the appointment of an executive director as non-executive director will have a positive impact on the appointing company‟s performance.
