This book is written to serve as a reference handbook for the practicing engineer or
scientist who needs to prepare the basic process engineering and cost estimation
required for the design of an air pollution control system. The user of this book
should have a fundamental understanding of the factors resulting in air pollution
and a general knowledge of the techniques used for air pollution control.
Welcome to the
Air Pollution Control Equipment Selection Guide
The selection of air pollution control hardware can be a daunting task.
There are literally hundreds of equipment vendors offering a wide variety
of air pollution control technologies. If this book has one purpose, it is to
make that selection process easier.
In the following pages, we have labored to include the important
information required by people interested in air pollution control that can
be used in selecting the proper equipment for any air pollution control
My interest in environmental pollution control microbiology began at MIT in
1948 when I realized that very little was known about this vital area of sanitary
engineering technology. I became a serious student of environmental pollution
control microbiology in 1950 when I began research on the microbiology and
the biochemistry of floe-forming bacteria in activated sludge. I must admit that
environmental pollution control microbiology has been my area of technical
specialization since 1950. It has been a most interesting experience that I have

In relation to studies and understanding of broad energy and pollution management
issues, the U.S. National Academies have had an on-going program of cooperation with
the Chinese Academies (Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of
Engineering) for a number of years. Joint study activities date to the late 1990s and led to
the publication in 2000 of Cooperation in the Energy Futures of China and the United
States. This volume was the first examination of the broad energy questions facing both
nations at the turn of the new millennium. ...
Publication of this book is a milestone for the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative
Council. It demonstrates the Council's unique capacity to bring together water and
sanitation professionals from industrialised and developing countries to formulate
practical guidance on a key issue of the day.
Industrialised countries have extensive experience of the problems caused by water
pollution and the strategies and technologies available to control it.
Novel Materials and Processes for Pollution Control in the Mining Industry
Alan Fuchs and Shuo Peng
University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, Nevada
Tremendous opportunities exist in the area of novel materials for environmental engineering applications. These opportunities have traditionally been in the areas of membranes, ion exchange, and adsorbents, but new areas relating to technological advances in “nanomaterials” and “bio-applications” have spawned new generations of designed materials for many pollution control applications.
Water pollution is a major global problem that requires ongoing evaluation and
revision of water resource policy at all levels (from international down to individual
aquifers and wells). It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of
deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people

The major sources of indoor air pollution worldwide include indoor combustion of solid
fuels, tobacco smoking, outdoor air pollutants, emissions from construction materials and
furnishings, and improper maintenance of ventilation and air conditioning systems. Although
some indoor air pollutants, such as environmental tobacco smoke, are of concern globally,
profiles of indoor air pollutants and the resulting health risks are generally very different in
developed and developing countries.
The recommendations and principles from Agenda 21 cover water resources
management in general, i.e. including availability of water, demand regulation, supply
and tariffs, whereas water pollution control should be considered as a subset of water
resources management. Water resources management entails two closely related
elements, that is the maintenance and development of adequate quantities of water of
adequate quality (see Case Study V, South Africa). Thus, water resources management
cannot be conducted properly without paying due attention to water quality aspects.
