Minor structural proteins of mouse polyomavirus (MPyV) are essential for
virus infection. To study their properties and possible contributions to cell
death induction, fusion variants of these proteins, created by linking
enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) to their C- or N-termini, were
prepared and tested in the absence of other MPyV gene products, namely the
tumor antigens and the major capsid protein, VP1.

This uncommon type of skin cancer develops from neuroendocrine cells (hormone-making
cells that resemble nerve cells in some ways) in the skin. They are most often found on the
head, neck, and arms but can start anywhere.
These cancers are thought to be caused in part by sun exposure and in part by Merkel cell
polyomavirus (MCV). About 8 out of 10 Merkel cell carcinomas are thought to be related to
MCV infection. MCV is a common virus. Many people are infected with MCV, but it usually
causes no symptoms. In a small portion of people with this infection,...
Renal and Ureteral Infections Infections of the urinary tract are common among patients whose ureteral excretion is compromised (Table 82-1). Candida, which has a predilection for the kidney, can invade either from the bloodstream or in a retrograde manner (via the ureters or bladder) in immunocompromised patients. The presence of "fungus balls" or persistent candiduria suggests invasive disease. Persistent funguria (with Aspergillus as well as Candida) should prompt a search for a nidus of infection in the kidney.
Certain viruses are typically seen only in immunosuppressed patients.
Host species specificity of the polyomaviruses simian virus
40 (SV40) and mouse polyomavirus (PyV) has been shown
to be determined by the host DNA polymerase a-primase
complex involved in the initiation of both viral and host
DNA replication. Here we demonstrate that DNA repli-cation of the related human pathogenic polyomavirus JC
virus (JCV) can be supportedin vitro by DNA polymerase
a-primase of either human or murine origin indicating that
the mechanism of its strict species specificity differs from
that of SV40 and PyV.
