  • Until fairly recently most scientific data-gathering systems and industrial control procedures were based on electromechanical devices such as chart recorders and analogue gauges. The capability to process and analyse data was rather limited (and in some cases error prone) unless one had access to a minicomputer or mainframe. Today, that situation has changed considerably. I am sure that most potential readers of this book will be aware of the profound effect the PC has had on the way in which engineers and scientists are able to approach data-gathering tasks....

  • The aim of this primer is to provide the reader with a self-contained, introductory account of the science of electrochemistry. It seeks to explain the origin of electrode potentials, show their link with chemical thermodynamics and to indicate why their measurement is important in chemistry. In so doing some ideas about solution non-ideality and how ions move in solution are helpful, and essential diversions into these topics are made in Chapters 2 and 3

  • We study distributional similarity measures for the purpose of improving probability estimation for unseen cooccurrences. Our contributions are three-fold: an empirical comparison of a broad range of measures; a classification of similarity functions based on the information that they incorporate; and the introduction of a novel function that is superior at evaluating potential proxy distributions.

  • Measure words in Chinese are used to indicate the count of nouns. Conventional statistical machine translation (SMT) systems do not perform well on measure word generation due to data sparseness and the potential long distance dependency between measure words and their corresponding head words. In this paper, we propose a statistical model to generate appropriate measure words of nouns for an English-to-Chinese SMT system. We model the probability of measure word generation by utilizing lexical and syntactic knowledge from both source and target sentences. ...

  • Sentence compression is the task of producing a summary at the sentence level. This paper focuses on three aspects of this task which have not received detailed treatment in the literature: training requirements, scalability, and automatic evaluation. We provide a novel comparison between a supervised constituentbased and an weakly supervised wordbased compression algorithm and examine how these models port to different domains (written vs. spoken text).

  • The ability to detect similarity in conjunct heads is potentially a useful tool in helping to disambiguate coordination structures - a difficult task for parsers. We propose a distributional measure of similarity designed for such a task. We then compare several different measures of word similarity by testing whether they can empirically detect similarity in the head nouns of noun phrase conjuncts in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) treebank.

  • Organic carbon concentrations can be reduced by enhanced coagulation, granular activated carbon or membrane filtration, but this fact can also lead to increased in brominated THMs (Black et al, 1996.). A combination of coagulation, ozonation, and biofiltration can effectively reduce trihalomethane and haloacetic acid formation potential (Chaiket et al, 2002.). Natural organic matter (NOM), the main precursor of DBPs, can also be removed by media filters coated with iron oxide

  • In recent years, enormous strides have been made in the art and science of credit risk measurement and management. Much of the energy in this area has resulted from dissatisfaction with traditional approaches to credit risk measurement and with the current Bank for International Settlements (BIS) regulatory model.

  • Because of the potential public health implications, the importance of toxic air pollutants in ambient air has been recognized to some degree for many years. Efforts to “regulate” human activities resulting in the production of ambient air pollutants probably date back many centuries, even as the combustion of fossil fuels and air pollution from other organized human activities began having a noticeable impact on the environment.

  • When compared to the constant lubrication problems associated with chain drives, or the mechanical problems and high costs associated with gear drives, belts are the most cost-effective, reliable means of power transmission. However, optimum belt drive performance requires proper maintenance. The potential for long service life is built into every Gates belt. When coupled with a regularly scheduled maintenance program, belt drives will run relatively trouble-free for a long time.

  • Because of the frequent, often daily, exposure to a large number and diversity of pathogens (disease-causing agents), wastewater personnel have general and specific concerns related to the potential health hazards presented by pathogens. Pathogens commonly found in wastewater and of concern to wastewater personnel include viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and helminths. Allergens, endotoxins, and exotoxins are also found in wastewater and represent a concern to wastewater personnel.

  • Voltammetry techniques measure current as a function of applied potential under conditions that promote polarization of a working electrode. Polarography: Invented by J. Heyrovsky (Nobel Prize 1959). Differs from voltammetry in that it employs a dropping mercury electrode (DME) to continuously renew the electrode surface. Amperometry: current proportional to analyte concentration is monitored at a fixed potential

  • This book considers electronic devices applied to process analog signals in in strument making, automation, measurements, and other branches of technology. They perform various transformations of electrical signals: scaling, integration, logarithming, etc. Such devices are considered in tutorials on electronics. The need in their deeper study is caused, on the one hand, by the great demands of extending the range of input signals, as well as increasing the accuracy and speed of such devices, which usually receive insufficient attention.

  • This book provides a practical and easy-to-use guide to how to make the most of Lectra’s Modaris pattern cutting software. It is based on my 40 years as a Pattern Cutter, including 10 years using CAD pattern cutting software such as Modaris. This practical experience has, I hope, put me in a particularly strong position to show you how to use Modaris to its full potential in the classroom and in the workplace. As anyone who has used software knows, there are all sorts of shortcuts, functions etc. that you only really learn by trial and error as you use...

  • In November 2009, EIF issued a working paper on the European microfinance market. In this study, we found that there are wide spectra of final beneficiaries and intermediaries and concluded that there is no common microfinance business model in Europe. While our findings suggested that the microfinance market is immature and fragmented, they also pointed to its growing importance as a market segment with a potential to counter poverty and unemployment while fostering financial and social inclusion.
