Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 4. Screening and Prevention of Disease
Screening and Prevention of Disease: Introduction
A primary goal of health care is to prevent disease or to detect it early enough that intervention will be more effective. Strategies for disease screening and prevention are driven by evidence that testing and intervention are practical and effective. Currently most screening tests are readily available and inexpensive. Examples include tests that are biochemical (e.g., cholesterol, glucose), physiologic (e.g., blood pressure, growth curves), radiologic (e.g.
The prognosis for individuals with liver cancer is frequently poor. Cancers include those which have metastasized to the liver from elsewhere, reflecting advanced stage disease where cure is rarely possible. Similarly, primary liver cancer frequently complicates chronic liver disease, which further limits therapeutic options. Despite these dismal facts, there are signs that change is imminent. Not only have imaging modalities and surgical techniques improved, but preventive strategies and medical therapies show promise.
This document sets out a strategy for securing the benefits of greater openness for
our economy, for British business, for the global economy and especially for the
world’s poorest people. This White Paper is the Government’s initial statement to our
trade and investment partners across the world about how we plan to work together
for mutual benefit. It also sets out the Government’s commitment to addressing the
barriers that hold businesses back from trading and investing, and to ensuring that the
UK is one of the most attractive places in the world to invest and do business....

The Army cannot effectively project power if it cannot get to where it needs to go to confront future adversaries. The authors of this report developed scenarios and conducted political-military games to determine what strategies, tactics, and capabilities potential adversaries might use to prevent or complicate U.S. access to
Our study panel began deliberations with significantly divergent
views on the meaning of the concept of “psychological consequences”
and the definition of terrorism. In addition we had many perspectives on
the appropriate preventive and therapeutic roles of public health and
mental health systems with respect to the psychological consequences of
terrorism. We agreed that terrorism affected humans in all walks of life
and that societal terrorists are as diverse as the individuals they terrorize
CEPH accredits about 75 public health programs in a variety of kinds of
institutions, e.g., MPH programs in medical schools. Some programs are
not CEPH-accredited. Estimates gathered from 2007 (Association for
Prevention Teaching and Research; unpublished survey) indicate that less
than 1,300 graduates/year come from CEPH-accredited programs.
number of graduates from unaccredited schools and programs is unknown.
Several large, for-profit, online universities also offer public health pro-
grams and degrees.
Following the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, U.S. leaders recast the national security strategy to place greater emphasis on the threats posed by terrorists and by states from which they might acquire weapons of mass destruction, and announced that in the future the United States would take
Government efforts to meet the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) Child Health program societal outcomes
will have long-term benefi ts for Ontarians and the province. Provincial government strategies, e.g., the Poverty

Nigerian Boat Regatta Sets Sail toward Healthier Horizons
In Nigeria, small grant awardee So-Healthi hosted a boat regatta to raise awareness about pneumonia
and the fact that it kills nearly 180,000 Nigerian children each year. The event focused on educating
families about prevention and treatment of the illness and drew more than 300 participants.
During the event, a medical team examined babies and children for pneumonia, and local government
officials announced that pneumococcal vaccine doses donated by Pfizer were being administered
in their state that day.
This chapter suggests design principles to plan a threat control and containment strategy using firewalls and intrusion prevention systems in Cisco IOS environments. This chapter provides a general evaluation of the current state of enterprise security in the presence of evolving threats. It presents the design considerations for a threat protection strategy as part of a risk management strategy with Cisco threat control and containment solutions.
