  • Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) models have been shown to provide a better model for capturing polysemy and synonymy than Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA). However, the parameters of a PLSA model are trained using the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm, and as a result, the trained model is dependent on the initialization values so that performance can be highly variable. In this paper we present a method for using LSA analysis to initialize a PLSA model.

  • Success in writing and winning grants comes through practice-based effort, sustained enthusiasm, tenacity, and a commitment to turn temporary set- backs (i.e., proposal rejections) into renewed efforts and grant awards. Few educators or librarians begin their professional careers prepared to par- ticipate in the grant seeking process. As their careers evolve, they recognize and understand economic realities. Without supplemental funding, schools and their media centers are often forced to choose between essential and desirable programs.

  • In this chapter we will consider an important class of problems in which the fluid is either at rest or moving in such a manner that there is no relative motion between adjacent particles. In both instances there will be no shearing stresses in the fluid, and the only forces that develop on the surfaces of the particles will be due to the pressure. Thus, our principal concern is to investigate pressure and its variation throughout a fluid and the effect of pressure on submerged surfaces. The absence of shearing stresses greatly simplifies the analysis and, as we will see,...

  • Invariant measures for the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of a negatively curved Riemannian manifold are a basic and well-studied subject. This paper continues an investigation into a 2-dimensional analog of this flow for a 3-manifold N . Namely, the article discusses 2-dimensional surfaces immersed into N whose product of principal curvature equals a constant k between 0 and 1, surfaces which are called k-surfaces.
