In this chapter, we go beyond the basic transaction processing schemes discussed pre-viously, and cover more advanced transaction-processing concepts, including trans-action-processing monitors, workflow systems, main-memory databases, real-time transaction systems, and handling of long-duration transactions by means of nested transactions, multi-level transactions and weak degrees of consistency.

Improvement initiatives may be little more than educated guesses at the ideas and activities that have the potential of improving the maturity level of a process or knowledge area. Remember, they may have come as a result of a brainstorming session. Even though they are the task force’s educated guesses, they are expected to result in some level of improvement. That expectation may even be stated quantitatively.
Landfills are excavated or engineered sites where non-liquid hazardous waste is deposited for final disposal and covered. These units are selected and designed to minimize the chance of release of hazardous waste into the environment. Design standards for hazardous waste landfills require a double liner; double leachate collection and removal systems (LCRS); leak detection system; run on, runoff, and wind dispersal controls; construction quality assurance (CQA) program. Liquid wastes may not be placed in a hazardous waste landfill.
Operation costing is used in situations where products have some common charac-
teristics and some individual characteristics. Shoes, for example, have common character-
istics in that all styles involve cutting and sewing that can be done on a repetitive basis,
using the same equipment and following the same basic procedures. Shoes also have
individual characteristics—some are made of expensive leathers and others may be made
using inexpensive synthetic materials.
Practical and user-friendly, this volume provides an evidence and rights-based approach to monitoring the well-being of children and adolescents in South Africa. Drawing on international precedents, and extensive peer review processes, experts in various fields have developed this holistic set of indicators to enhance the monitoring of the status of children.
This paper describes a fully incremental dialogue system that can engage in dialogues in a simple domain, number dictation. Because it uses incremental speech recognition and prosodic analysis, the system can give rapid feedback as the user is speaking, with a very short latency of around 200ms. Because it uses incremental speech synthesis and self-monitoring, the system can react to feedback from the user as the system is speaking. A comparative evaluation shows that naïve users preferred this system over a non-incremental version, and that it was perceived as more human-like. ...
Any complex process requires planning and monitoring. The quality process requires coordination of many different activities over a period that spans a full development cycle and beyond. Planning is necessary to order, provision, and coordinate all the activities that support a quality goal, and monitoring of actual status against a plan is required to steer and adjust the process.
In this chapter, students will be able to: Understand the purposes of planning and monitoring; distinguish strategies from plans, and understand their relation; understand the role of risks in planning; understand the potential role of tools in monitoring a quality process; understand team organization as an integral part of planning.
Lecture Project management: The managerial process (6/e) - Chapter 14: Project closure. The main contents of the chapter consist of the following: Types of project closure, wrap-up closure activities, post-implementation evaluation, retrospectives.
Temperature measurement and control are vital in many industrial processes.
Accurate control of the temperature is essential in nearly all chemical processes.
In some applications, an accuracy of around 5-10~ may be acceptable. There
are also some industrial applications which require better than 4-1 ~ accuracy.
The generation of wastes as a result of human activities has been continuously speeding up since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Hence, both optimized waste water treatment technologies and modern tools to assess the effects of pollution sources are necessary to prevent the contamination of aquatic ecosystems The book offers an interdisciplinary collection of topics concerning waste water treatment technologies, water quality monitoring and evaluation of waste water impact on natural environments.
In the past, many a good Machinery Manager was “made” through many
years of experience, and also through many costly mistakes. These “experts”
passed on their experience to the people they worked with, but seldom could
experience gained in one particular location prepare someone for the multitude
of things that can go wrong. It is because of this that the authors must be commended
for their effort to disseminate not only their experience, but also the
lessons they learned from many other experts....
