  • This handbook emphasizes the use of synthetic membranes for separations involving industrial or municipal process streams. Little will be said concerning the use of membranes in medical applications as in artificial kidneys or for controlled drug release. Most of the membrane processes are pressure driven. The notable exception to this is electrodialysis (ED) by which ions are separated under the influence of an electric field. In addition, the chapter on coupled transport covers processes which are driven under the influence of a concentration gradient....

  • A heat exchanger is a vessel that transfers heat energy from one process stream to another. A common physical configuration for heat exchangers is a shell and tube exchanger, where a bundle of tubes sits inside a shell. There is no mixing of fluid between the shell and the tubes.

  • The United States has been in the process of destroying its chemical munitions for well over a decade. Initially, the U.S. Army, guided by recommendations from the National Research Council (NRC), decided to use incineration as its destruction method at all sites. However, citizens in some states with stockpile storage sites oppose incineration on the grounds that the exact nature of the effluents escaping from the stacks cannot be determined.

  • To understand a speaker's turn of a conversation, one needs to segment it into intonational phrases, clean up any speech repairs that might have occurred, and identify discourse markers. In this paper, we argue that these problems must be resolved together, and that they must be resolved early in the processing stream. We put forward a statistical language model that resolves these problems, does POS tagging, and can be used as the language model of a speech recognizer.

  • 4.2.3 MTMF MTMF combines the best parts of the Linear Spectral Mixing model and the statistical Matched Filter model while avoiding the drawbacks of each parent method (Boardman, 1998). It is a useful Matched Filter method without knowing all the possible endmembers in a landscape especially in case of subtle, sub-pixel occurrences. Firstly, pixel spectra and endmember spectra require a minimum noise fraction (MNF) (Green et al., 1988, Boardman, 1993) transformation. MNF reduces and separates an image into its most dimensional and non-noisy components.

  • GWT in Practice is an example-driven, code-rich book designed for web developers already familiar with the basics of GWT who now want hands-on experience. After a quick review of GWT fundamentals, GWT in Practice presents scores of handy, reusable solutions to the problems you face when you need to move beyond "Hello World" and "proof of concept" applications. This book skips the theory and looks at the way things really work when you're building. I also shows you where GWT fits into the Enterprise Java Developer's toolset.

  • The Rectisol process uses methanol as wash solvent. The methanol has many benefits, is globally available and is a low-cost washing agent. Furthermore, methanol is chemically and thermally stable and will not change its behavior and structure over a long service life. The Rectisol wash unit operates at temperatures below 0°C. To lower the feed gas temperatures, it is cooled against cold-product streams before entering the absorber tower. At the absorber tower, CO2 and H2S/COS are removed.

  • Various alkaline, semichemical, organosolv and other methods have been developed for non-wood pulping but many of them are tested only in laboratory environments. Paper I reviews in more detail the recent developments in the chemical and chemi-mechanical non-wood pulping processes and the advantages and disadvantages of these systems. No remarkable breakthrough has occurred in recent decades in the field of non-wood pulping, excluding the Chempolis and CIMV process development.

  • Borealis is a second-generation distributed stream processing engine that is being developed at Brandeis University, Brown University, and MIT. Borealis inherits core stream processing functionality from Aurora [14] and distribution functionality from Medusa [51]. Borealis modifies and extends both systems in non-trivial and critical ways to provide advanced capabilities that are commonly required by newly-emerging stream processing applications. In this paper, we outline the basic design and functionality of Borealis. Through sample real-world applications, we motivate the need for...

  • For millennia, advances in human progress have been tied to our ability to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the wastes we produce—ranging from human waste to the organic and inorganic by-products of everyday living. Across the world, cultures learned to bury their dead away from their homes and to burn their waste or make certain that it was carried away by streams and rivers flowing downstream from their homes. Those cultures that learned this most effectively thrived. When the industrial revolution took place in the nineteenth century, rivers again enabled progress.

  • Although there have been clear improvements in the delivery of specific health services, many of the systemic problems facing the U.S. child health system seem intractable and resistant to incremental reform strategies. Both the 1981 report of the Select Panel for the Promotion of Child Health and the 1991 report of the Na- tional Commission on Children highlighted numerous system-level problems re- lated to fragmented programs, disjointed and inadequate funding streams, inade- quate performance monitoring, and the lack of a coherent planning framework.

  • However, payment systems are not run by a ‘central planner’, but are populated by independent banks interacting strategically. We therefore look at the equilibrium liquidity/routing choices. A typical equilibrium here has banks routing part of their payments to RTGS, and part into the LSM, with the reliance on the LSM increasing with the price of liquidity. Despite the fact that such an outcome is inefficient (the planner would choose either of the two streams, never both), it can still be better than the one emerging without the LSM.
