  • Synthetic polymers fulfill many functions in biotechnology and medicine. In cell culture technology and tissue engineering they provide the surfaces to which cells may attach. Cross-linked polymer networks are used for drug delivery and cell encapsulation. Polymer-based porous membranes can be used to shield implanted cells from the immune system of the host, while allowing for the exchange of nutrients and metabolic waste products thus keeping the cells alive and functioning.

  • Ian and Jane Campbell of Barambah Organics near Murgon in Queensland produce, process and market certified organic milk. Their movement into organic production was born from a long family interest in sustainable agriculture and the need to create a point of difference for their products. “Customers are often surprised by the unique taste of our milk. It comes from a balanced and healthy diet for the cows on our chemical-free broadacre pastures,” said Ian. Soil health and weed control are important considerations and are carefully managed with compost manures and lime.

  • The discipline of economics has developed principles, theories, and models that isolate the most important determinants of economic events. In constructing a model, economists make assumptions to eliminate unnecessary detail to reduce the complexity of economic behavior. Once modeled, economic behavior may be presented as a relationship between dependent and independent variables. The behavior being explained is the dependent variable; the economic events explaining that behavior are the independent variables.

  • Eating habits in the western world today bear little resemblance to those of our grandparents and those who lived in the earlier part of the twentieth century. The science and technology of food production, processing and distribution has developed dramatically. With the aid of more rapid transport, by land, sea and air, an almost limitless range of food, in greater quantities than ever, from all over the world, is available from retail outlets for home preparation or ‘eating out’ at restaurants, fast food establishments and other food service premises.

  • As early as the middle of the 19th century, scientists were beginning to isolate and characterize organic compounds from nature. Modern studies of the nature of natural products, those compounds not involved in primary metabolic processes, began in the 1930s and 1940s. In the decades that followed, scientists began to focus on why organisms produce these compounds.

  • The discovery of a new drug is a challenging task that includes (a) identifica- tion of a biochemical target for certain diseases and (b) screening of a large number of compounds from libraries of compounds arising from synthetic chemistry, combinatorial chemistry, and natural product isolation for lead gen- eration. The lead compound is then optimized based on biological activity, selectivity, pharmacokinetic property, and metabolism.

  • The traditional direct marketing paradigm implicitly assumes that there is no possibility of a customer purchasing the product unless he receives the direct promotion. In real business environments, however, there are “voluntary buyers” who will make the purchase even without marketing contact. While no direct promotion is needed for voluntary buyers, the traditional response-driven paradigm tends to target such customers. In this thesis, the traditional paradigm is examined in detail. We argue that it cannot maximize the net profit.

  • Abstract: Shrimp chitin and chitosan with improved characteristics were isolated from black tiger shrimp waste pretreated with 0.04 M Salicylic acid for ten hours. The pretreated shrimp shells could be efficiently demineralized and deproteinized at ambient temperature using 0.680 M HCl and 0.620 M NaOH, respectively. The duration of the treatments was 8 hours, the ash and protein residues in the final chitosan were about 0.48% and 0.51% respectively; the viscosity was 4800 cps; the solubility was up to 98%.

  • Manufacturing companies deploy sensors in their products to return a stream of telemetry. Sometimes this is used to deliver services like OnStar, that delivers communications, security and navigation services. Perhaps more importantly, this telemetry also reveals usage patterns, failure rates and other opportunities for product improvement that can reduce development and assembly costs. The proliferation of smart phones and other GPS devices offers advertisers an opportunity to target consumers when they are in close proximity to a store, a coffee shop or a restaurant.

  • During the years surrounding the new millennium, the field of vibrational optical activity (VOA), comprised principally of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and vibrational Raman optical activity (ROA), underwent a transition from a specialized area of research that had been practiced by a handful of pioneers into an important newfield of spectroscopy practiced by an increasing number of scientists worldwide. This transition was made possible by the development of commercial instrumentation and software for the routine measurement and quantum chemical calculation ofVOA.
