  • Since the first DIISM conference, which took place 9 years ago, the world has seen drastic changes, including the transformation of manufacturing and engineering software, and the information and communication technologies deployed. The conditions for manufacturing and engineering have changed on a large scale, in terms of technology-enabled collaboration among the fields of design, engineering, production, usage, maintenance and recycling/disposal. These changes can be observed in rapidly-growing fields such as supply chain management....

  • Lots of Chinese characters are very productive in that they can form many structured words either as prefixes or as suffixes. Previous research in Chinese word segmentation mainly focused on identifying only the word boundaries without considering the rich internal structures of many words. In this paper we argue that this is unsatisfying in many ways, both practically and theoretically. Instead, we propose that word structures should be recovered in morphological analysis.

  • Nowadays, Software Product Line (SPL) is considered to be one of the most popular technical paradigms and emerging methodologies in developing software products. The SPL consists of two main processes: the domain-engineering process and the application-engineering process. Collecting software assets regarding a specific business area falls within the domain-engineering process

  • Consistent success in selling requires certain innate talents; training and desire alone are not enough. Putting bankers through a sales training class has never been proven to yield a permanent increase in sales productivity unless their immediate supervisor is strongly supportive of selling. Lukewarm compliance and simply going through the motions just won’t cut it; we need managers who are passionate advocates committed to this program.

  • Arts-related real estate markets have paradoxical entry barriers and advantages. There are barriers inherent in the uncertainty of demand, zoning issues and the costs of retrofitting old systems. At the same time, entry barriers are lowered because the space demand is flexible and often requires minimal high-end fixtures and adaptations. Art-making, performance, craft production and exhibition spaces attract users who want to adapt and re-create space in flexible ways.

  • Over many years, the petrochemical industry has built up an effective infra- structure for processing and distributing hydrocarbon-based products. Due to reliance on imported crude oil, much of the U.S. infrastructure is geographically located around the coastline (Fig. 9). Thus, many current processing facilities are not well situated for the collection of large volumes of plant-derived material. Where plant materials are processed in lumber mills, oil crushers, or corn wet mills, these are situated adjacent to areas of supply.

  • China’s papermaking technology itself is relatively similar across establishments because, until recently, the industry relied on a couple of domestic manufacturers making nearly identical machines for each stage in the papermaking process (CTAPI (1993)). The critical differences in the technology come from the use of two alternative raw materials (wood and non-wood fibers) and from the production of either bleached or unbleached papers. Both differences are important to understanding the industry’s pollution.

  • That said, a variety of alternatives present themselves. The first is to use data on the difference between growth prior to the crisis and its trough. This measure, however, may be sensitive to the phase of an economy’s business cycle during 2007 and does not incorporate the duration of the crisis. Another possibility is to use forecast data and consider downward revisions and disappointments. Such a measure unnecessarily restricts the scope of the exercise, as data are not available for a broad sample of countries.

  • Over recent years we have made considerable progress towards understanding what drives innovation and how Government can help businesses develop innovative products and services. Through work like the Innovation Report 2003 and the Lambert Review of University and Business Collaboration 2003, the Department and others across Government have recognised the central role of technology and science in innovation and the UK’s long-term economic growth. Two notable policy responses have been the 10 Year Science and Innovation Framework and the Tax Credit for Research and Development.

  • Product designers learned years ago that they’d save time and money if they consulted with their colleagues in manufacturing rather than just throwing new designs over the wall. The two functions realized it wasn’t enough to just coexist—not when they could work together to create value for the company and for customers. You’d think that marketing and sales teams, whose work is also deeply interconnected, would have discovered something similar.

  • Adhere to the published practices of the development project. This should ensure, at minimum, a consistent and maintainable product on which to build application security. Projects should apply a development methodology appropriate to the requirements. Neither a classic waterfall nor agile development process is appropriate in all cases. A consistency of approach ensures that design documents and code are easily accessible to all members of the project.

  • Computer source code is often written by computer programmers. Source code is written in a programming language that usually follows one of two main paradigms: imperative or declarative programming. Source code may be converted into an executable file (sometimes called an executable program or a binary) by a compiler and later executed by a central processing unit. Alternatively, computer programs may be executed with the aid of an interpreter, or may be embedded directly into hardware.
