The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) asked the National
Research Council’s (NRC) Board on Science, Technology, and Economic
Policy (STEP) to review the operations of the Advanced Technology Program
(ATP) to ascertain if the program is achieving its legislated objectives and to
recommend potential improvements in its operations.
The teaching of writing in higher education almost always occurs
within a writing program (or similar unit such as a department largely
devoted to the teaching of writing) under the supervision and coordination
of an administrator, often called a Writing Program Administrator
(WPA). Furthermore, the field of teaching of writing has socially, economically,
and historically been organized around writing programs.
A reliable indicator of candidate proficiency
in critical thinking and analytical writing
Graduate schools are now able to receive valuable information that can
be factored into admissions decisions: applicants’ scores on the
GRE Writing Assessment. Since October 1999, examinees have had
the opportunity to demonstrate, in a controlled testing situation, the
kinds of high-level thinking and writing skills generally recognized
as essential for success in many graduate programs.
Risk assessment of chemical substances is an ever-developing discipline. Transparent and accurate
risk assessments are necessary for decision-makers to make wise risk management decisions. The
outcome of risk assessments may have enormous economical consequences, in addition to the
consequences for human health and the environment. Globalization is a fact, with huge possibilities
for economic and social prosperity. Food and consumer products are produced in one part of the
world and put on the market in another....
A Tester’s Guide to .NET Programming focuses solely on applied programming techniques for testers. You will learn how to write simple automated tests, enabling you to test tools and utilities. You will also learn about the important concepts driving modern programming today, like multitier applications and object-oriented programming. More businesses are adopting .NET technologies, and this book will equip you to assess software robustness and performance. Whether you’re an experienced programmer who’s unfamiliar with testing concepts, or you’re an experienced tester versed in VB .
minimize the risk of noncompliance with export control laws.
Export Management and Compliance Program Defined
An EMCP includes both the operational export compliance policies and
procedures an organization implements and a written set of guidelines
that captures those policies and procedures.
Agile has become today’s dominant software development paradigm, but agile methods remain difficult to measure and improve. Essential Skills for the Agile Developer fills this gap from the bottom up, teaching proven techniques for assessing and optimizing both individual and team agile practices.
This study looks at whether Vietnam could adopt the Payment for Environmental Services (PES) approach as part of its national conservation strategy. Using a pilot study in the country’s uplands, it investigates how such a scheme might run and assesses its impact on the environment and on the local people’s livelihoods. Through a review of current Vietnamese conservation practice, it assesses the barriers to the adoption of such schemes and the factors that might encourage their implementation....
The purpose of this book is to present a basic yet comprehensive
treatment of assessment methods for use by health professions educators.
While there are many excellent textbooks in psychometric theory
and its application to large-scale standardized testing programs and
many educational measurement and assessment books designed for
elementary and secondary teachers and graduate students in education
and psychology, none of these books is entirely appropriate for
the specialized educational and assessment requirements of the health
In some cases, excellence was also observed when basic research, facilities, systems analysis, flight integration, and testing and evaluation were vertically integrated or when programs had achieved success over a period of 10 to 15 years and continue to do so. Key issues, findings,
The F-16 Multinational Staged Improvement Program (MSIP) is the development program that the F-16 program has used to move beyond the F-16A/B. Its primary product has been the F-16C/D, an aircraft whose design evolves over time as new technological capabilities become available or attractive to incorporate in its design. MSIP is essentially a management device for coordinating many concurrent effo......
Military family support programs have proliferated in recent years, but there has been little evaluation of whether these programs are meeting their key objectives. To help fill this gap, a RAND study explored the curriculum, themes, and outcomes of Operation Purple, a free weeklong summer camp program for youth with a deployed parent.
This monograph describes a model for evaluating the combined capacity of organic (U.S. Air Force–owned and –operated) and contractor maintenance assets to meet aircraft programmed depot maintenance (PDM) workloads. The PDM Capacity Assessment Tool (PDMCAT) forecasts the average number of aircraft that will be in PDM status each year over several decades,1 based on the initial number of aircraft in PDM status, the physical capacity of the facility or facilities (number of docks available for conducting PDM work),...
The purpose of this study was to investigate the operation of the Hoabinh
reservoir in the Red River Basin of Vietnam, and assess the room for its
improvement by application of system analysis and optimal control techniques.
The study aimed at establishing a foundation for further research
on inter-reservoir regulation of the Basin. Finally, this study provided
a testing ground for developing and comparing dierent reservoir optimization
After you read this chapter you should be able to: Discuss the importance of project management, feasibility assessment, documentation, and data and information gathering techniques; discuss the purpose of each system development phase; differentiate between lowlevel languages and procedural languages;...
The Committee to Review Assembled Chemical
Weapons Alternatives Program Detonation Technologies
was appointed by the National Research Council
(NRC) in response to a request by the U.S. Army’s
Program Manager for Assembled Chemical Weapons
Three types of detonation technologies available
from technology vendors and the Army’s explosive
destruction system (EDS), collectively known as
explosive destruction technologies (EDTs), are being
considered for use at the Blue Grass Army Depot in
Richmond, Kentucky, and the Pueblo Chemical Depot
in Pueblo, Colorado....
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) funds research across a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines in support of the Navy and Marine Corps. To ensure that its investments are serving those ends and are of high quality, ONR requires each of its departments to undergo annual review. Since 1999, the Naval Expeditionary Warfare Department of ONR has requested that the NRC conduct these reviews. This report presents the results of the second review of the Marine Corps Science and Technology program. The first review was conducted in 2000. ...
Generating electricity from a heat source using no
moving mechanical parts is the ultimate goal of the
Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s thermionics program.
However, developing thermionic energy conversion
devices has proven difficult, although much
progress has been made. In spite of initial success during
the late 1960s and intermittent funding since that
time, for a variety of reasons no thermionic system has
yet been developed in the United States that can be
used today on Earth or in space.
Functional Skills are vital to enable an individual to enjoy life and participate in society. Timely assessment of a person’s ability to function can guide diagnosis, help with program planning and intervention, as well as assist in the decisions being made about the level of assistance or care a person might require.
