  • When Claus-Dieter Ehlermann asked me in late December 2004 whether I would be willing to contribute to the 10th Annual Competition Law and Policy Workshop, I was not quite sure whether he was about to offer me a Christmas gift or another Dardanians’ present. 1 After all, the relationship between the protection of intellectual property and the maintenance of free competition is the subject of an age-old debate2 to which I had already con- tributed too much, with too little impact.

  • In this text, the basic mathematical properties of the golden ratio and its occurrence in the dimensions of two- and three-dimensional figures with fivefold symmetry are discussed. In addition, the generation of the Fibonacci series and generalized Finobacci series and their relationship to the golden ratio are presented. These concepts are applied to algorithms for searching and function minimization.

  • Polyurethane [PU] is a class of polymers built up of carabamate linkages, which provide special characteristics to the material. It is the outcome of pioneering research work of Otto Bayer and his coworkers in 1937 at I.G. Farben laboratories, in Leverkusen, Germany. Initial PU consisted of foams and fibres, while today, innovations and researches in the past decades have brought colossal changes in the world of PU.

  • New approaches to tailor-made cellulose/starch/lignin-synthetic polymer graft copolymers with precise control over molecular weight, degree of substitution, backbone-graft linkage, and the overall grafting process are being studied. Cross-linked graft copolymers with exactly defined polymer chain segments between crosslink points have been prepared. The graft copolymers exhibit a two-phase morphology and can function effectively as compatibilizers/interfacial agents to alloy cellulosic and lignocellulosic materials with synthetic polymers.

  • Rheology involves the study of the deformation and flow of matter. The goal is to establish relationships between stress and deformation for (non-Newtonian) materials where neither Newton's law nor Hooke's law suffice to explain their mechanical behaviour. Many materials exhibit a non-Newtonian behaviour and the area is relevant in many fields of study from industrial to technological applications such as concrete technology, geology, polymers and composites, plastics processing, paint flow, hemorheology, cosmetics, adhesives, etc ......

  • CLASSICAL GEOMETRY — LECTURE NOTES DANNY CALEGARI 1. A CRASH COURSE IN GROUP THEORY A group is an algebraic object which formalizes the mathematical notion which expresses the intuitive idea of symmetry. We start with an abstract definition. Definition 1.1. A group is a set G and an operation m : G × G → G called multiplication with the following properties: (1) m is associative. That is, for any a, b, c ∈ G, m(a, m(b, c)) = m(m(a, b), c) and the product can be written unambiguously as abc. (2) There is a unique element e ∈ G called the...

  • The main objective of this book is to show, in a logical sequence, a set of papers presenting new ideas that have been the result of the great advance in the knowledge of steel within the last few decades. Amongst the fundamental topics dealt with is the relationship between steel's properties in terms of its structure and composition and how this is affected by its surrounding environment (i.e. stresses, temperature, strains, etc.).

  • As SIAP notes, the organizational structure of many arts groups and institutions makes them ideal leverage points for local, regional and even global connections. They are flexible organizations that function across a range of applications and relationships; they are linked to local and non-local consumers and suppliers; they utilize horizontal business alliances to enrich their workforce, business offerings and customer base.

  • Cigarette smokers were 2.7 times more likely to have respiratory diseases than those of non-smokers. Similarly consumption of alcohol and use of non-smoked tobacco were found to be risk factors of hypertension. BMI more than 25 was risk factor for hypertension and diabetes. On the other hand risk of respiratory diseases and cataract increased below a BMI of 18.5. Risk for musculoskeletal problems was found to be higher in both extremes of physical status. The higher risk of diseases to the both extremes of BMI suggests a U- shaped relationship of diseases with BMI. BMI less 18.

  • On many levels, YouthAIDS revealed the power of celebrity advocates in promoting awareness and raising funds for a cause. Celebrity advocates were able to raise funds through conventional and unconventional means for the organization. For example, actress Debra Messing’s field visit to Zimbabwe raised awareness for PSI’s work in that country and provided the additional advocacy needed to raise millions of dollars of additional funding from USAID so many more kids could be saved.

  • Many who scoff at a book of etiquette would be shocked to hear the least expression of levity touching the Ten Commandments. But the Commandments do not always prevent such virtuous scoffers from dealings with their neighbor of which no gentleman could be capable and retain his claim to the title. Though it may require ingenuity to reconcile their actions with the Decalogue--the ingenuity is always forthcoming.

  • The relationships between international intellectual property treaties, the United Nations international environmental treaties (first and fore- most the convention on Biological Diversity), the relevant customary norms and soft law form a complex network of obligations that some- times conflict with each other. • Our empirical analysis uses two different data sources: the RobertWood Johnson Foundation’s 1997 Employer Health Insurance Survey (EHIS) and MEDSTAT MarketScan commercially insured health claims and eligibility information for 1998–1999. We first use the EHIS data to examine turnover patterns and their relationship to firm and employee characteristics. The EHIS data reveal that small firms are very heterogeneous; the heterogeneity concerns workers’ turnover rates, besides workers’ age distribution and other health-related demographic variables.

  • In [27], we introduced Floer homology theories HF − (Y, s), HF ∞ (Y, s), HF (Y, s),and HFred (Y, s) associated to closed, oriented three-manifolds Y equipped with a Spinc structures s ∈ Spinc (Y ). In the present paper, we give calculations and study the properties of these invariants. The calculations suggest a conjectured relationship with Seiberg-Witten theory.

  • There is growing recognition of the large health and productivity costs imposed by poor indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in commercial buildings—estimated variously at up to hundreds of billions of dollars per year. This is not surprising as people spend 90% of their time indoors, and the concentration of pollutants indoors is typically higher than outdoors, sometimes by as much as 10 or even 100 times. 6 The relationship between worker comfort/pro- ductivity and building design/operation is com- plicated.

  • Shape memory alloys have become in the past decades a well established research subject. However, the complex relations between properties and structure have created a continuously growing interest for a deeper insight all this time. The complexity of relationships between structure and properties is mostly related to the fact that strong ?multidimensional? interactions are taking place: from the early studies focusing on the thermal and/or mechanical induced phase transformations to the more recent findings on the magnetically induced structural changes.

Later chapters explore Kolmogorov complexity, channel capacity, differential entropy, the capacity of the fundamental Gaussian channel, the relationship between information theory and statistics, rate distortion and network information theories.
