  • By considering the provision of education of design professionals, it is possible to assess the changing nature of the design professions, in terms of discipline and growth. More recently, Sweden and Denmark have increased their investment in product design, which particularly feeds into the development of the telecommunications sector. In the UK, graphics, corporate identity and packaging dominate the educational provision for design.

  • We focus on the dynamics of active management skills, and how an investor might optimally choose active funds during varying business conditions. Building on studies such as Avramov and Wermers (2006) and Moskowitz (2000), we allow for the possibility of time-varying mutual fund alphas and betas among active managers in Europe. Following Christopherson, et al. (1998) and Ferson and Schadt (1996), we model such time-variation using a publicly available set of conditioning state variables.

This research for this study, which focused primarily on Sub-Sahara Africa and transition economies, identified over 80 investment funds working in agriculture and rural development. It then selected 31 agricultural investment funds that primarily or exclusively focus on investing in agriculture of the developing world.

It enhances managers’ ability to understand attitudes and to predict, explain and control behaviour in organisations. The unit links conceptual tools and experiential activities to understanding organisations and managing the change process.

  • However, part of this increase can be due to the inclusion of new lucky funds. As a consequence, the standard approach does not provide guidance on the location of funds with differential performance in the tails of the cross-sectional alpha distribution. For instance, suppose that the number of funds with negative estimated alphas increases by 50 as γ passes from 0.05 to 0.15. If all these 50 funds are lucky, we would conclude that the few funds with negative performance are located in the extreme left tail.

  • As documented in both panels of Table 5, AMCs related to large Thai commercial banks (LBs) dominate mutual fund industry. Large AMCs associated with Thai commercial banks (LBs) have largest market share in both fixed income and equity funds. For equity mutual funds, LBs possess 38.13% market share in 2006 and their market shares grow to 52.79% in 2010. The same pattern of high growth in market share of LB is also found for fixed income mutual funds, 58.14 to 2006 to 75.82% in 2010. Strong distribution channel of commercial bank is one of the mutual growth determinants.

  • Another kind of reductionism occurs with attempts to reduce percep- tion to brain processes or neural events (Ramachandran & Hirstein 1999). Evidently, the brain is necessary for perceptual processing. Yet, according to TSC, perceptual processes are constructed in real time in the interaction between agent and environment. As Harth (2004) remarks in discussing the relation between neurophysiology and art, a theory of artistic expression must take into account not only the human brain, but also the world at large.

  • Another cultural difference frequently remarked on by Volunteers is amount of time spent in staff meetings. A former Volunteer in Ghana who later returned to Africa as a Peace Corps staff member, reminisced about his teaching days, saying: When I was in Ghana, I would rather have hat my tongue nailed to a tree than sit through any more staff meetings. Though I've come to realize that these meetings aren't inefficient or indecisive. What seemed to me repetitious and pointless was a finely tuned communication machine in action...

  • The field of health informatics is taking center stage in the 21st century. As the information age evolves into the knowledge age, the enabling technologies will give us access to the data, information, and knowledge we need, whatever our discipline or field. Within nursing and across the healthcare team, we will look to these enablers to strengthen our ability to act knowledgeably on behalf of — and in concert with — the patient. Although informatics has already changed the way we practice our professions, we will continue our journey of transformation daily....

  • Sulfur trioxide irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. A concentration of 1 volume of SO3 in a million volumes of air (one part per million or 1 ppm) is enough to cause coughing and choking. Sulfur trioxide dissolves in water to form sulfuric acid, which is a strong acid capable of corroding or destroying many materials. Sulfur trioxide can absorb moisture from the atmosphere to form very fine droplets of sulfuric acid. Inhalation of these droplets can harm the respiratory system. Chronic exposure leads to a much greater likelihood of suffering from bronchitis.

The stamp also includes the design package/submittal number and date, check print number, and signature of the Originator of the document with the date. If all the individuals involved in the checking process will have consistent roles on the entire package to be checked, a cover sheet may be added to the package. A single check print stamp is applied to the cover sheet, instead of each individual sheet in the...

  • After the training phase, the table T can be used to generate syn- thetic data; given a key a,b,c it can return the likely x,y,z values of that key along with the probabilities. Equivalently, T can evaluate the probability that some value is correct. The neat thing about this is that the framework allows you to add your own machine- learning algorithms to this framework. This gives the machine- learning community a vehicle to make their technology accessible...

  • Whatever the debate about its nature and causes, almost all observers would agree that inner-city poverty is multidimensional, extraordinarily complex, and difficult to under- stand. Various disciplines and policy frameworks give rise to very different notions of poverty and of its sources. To economists, it is an issue of labor markets, productivity, incentives, human capital, and choice. Sociologists and anthropologists tend to emphasize social status and relations, behavior, and culture. For social psychologists, the issues may include self-image, group membership, and attitudes.

  • In terms of market share, Android may be on its way to dominating the mobile space the same way that Windows dominated the desktop/laptop arena. Malicious and high-risk Android apps are becoming more sophisticated. An “arms race” between Android attackers and security providers is likely to occur in the coming year, much as one occurred a decade or more ago over Microsoft Windows. Google has made improvements to the Android platform’s security.

  • Most of the central transit area is floored with the exotic types of wood known as paduk, merbau and jatoba, that come from South-East Asia and the West Indies. The first wooden floor in the airport was laid in 1960 in the then brand new Terminal 2. This type of wooden flooring has since become the preferred flooring in many of the new buildings in the airport and creates a warm contrast to the glass, aluminium and steel. These woods, whose orange and red-brown hues almost shimmer in the light, are very suitable for building purposes, inside and out.

  • Or, to be more circumspect, it is the object from which the name art cannot logically be withheld. The Readymade therefore proved that an arbitrary object can be designated as art and that there is no argument available to refute that designation. Depictions are works of art by definition. They may be popular art, amateur art, even entirely unskilled and unappealing art, but they are able to nominate themselves as art nonetheless. They are art because the depictive arts are founded on the mak- ing of depictions, and that making necessarily displays artistry. ...

  • Then again, morality begins at home. Just as the post-war German soldier was taught to obey inner fruehling, his own internal morality which must justify his disobeying manifestly illegal orders, any politician needs her own moral compass. Faced by the trap, the answer must be no. Shake the head, not the tempter’s hand. Nevertheless, power sharing inevitably involves trust, even in dangerous precincts. Dieter Gerhard, the spy in the Apartheid navy, 25 taught the present writer while in prison: “Trust your granny, after she is dead. Trust no-one else.
