o the folks at Sybex, especially Tom Cirtin who made this book available, Acey J. Bunch
for his technical expertise, and Erica Yee and Judy Flynn for their contributions to this
book. I want to thank Rodnay Zaks, the president of Sybex, who signed the contract. I also
extend my thanks to the other people in the Sybex team.
I still need to thank other people, especially the readers who have provided me with their
comments and suggestions about my previous works. During the process of writing this
book, the test monkey in Chapter 3 frequently reminded me of my early days as a schoolboy.
We propose a new specifically designed method for paraphrase generation based on Monte-Carlo sampling and show how this algorithm is suitable for its task. Moreover, the basic algorithm presented here leaves a lot of opportunities for future improvement. In particular, our algorithm does not constraint the scoring function in opposite to Viterbi based decoders. It is now possible to use some global features in paraphrase scoring functions. This algorithm opens new outlooks for paraphrase generation and other natural language processing applications like statistical machine translation.
Objectives: Develop theoretical framework research on improving the system issues motivational tool for public servants working in the administrative departments; clarifying the dynamics and reality of using system dynamics modeling tools for public servants working in the administrative departments; propose some solutions to improve the system motivational tool for civil servants working in administrative departments.
In this paper we introduce a bilingual dictionary generating tool that does not use any large bilingual corpora. With this tool we implement our novel pivot based bilingual dictionary generation method that uses mainly the WordNet of the pivot language to build a new bilingual dictionary. We propose the usage of WordNet for good accuracy, introducing also a double directional selection method with local thresholds to maximize recall.
In this paper we propose computeraided summarisation (CAS) as an alternative approach to automatic summarisation, and present an ongoing project which aims to develop a CAS system. The need for such an alternative approach is justified by the relatively poor performance of fully automatic methods used in summarisation. Our system combines several summarisation methods, allowing the user of the system to interact with their parameters and output in order to improve the quality of the produced summary. ...
Named Entity Extraction is a mature task in the NLP field that has yielded numerous services gaining popularity in the Semantic Web community for extracting knowledge from web documents. These services are generally organized as pipelines, using dedicated APIs and different taxonomy for extracting, classifying and disambiguating named entities. Integrating one of these services in a particular application requires to implement an appropriate driver. Furthermore, the results of these services are not comparable due to different formats.
In this paper we argue that comparative evaluation in anaphora resolution has to be performed using the same pre-processing tools and on the same set of data. The paper proposes an evaluation environment for comparing anaphora resolution algorithms which is illustrated by presenting the results of the comparative evaluation of three methods on the basis of several evaluation measures.
When I began writing The Law (In Plain English)
® series more than a quarter
of a century ago, I was a full-time law professor and practicing lawyer. As an
academic, I felt that my mission included providing educational tools for my
students. In my role as a practicing attorney, I realized the importance of hav-
ing material available for nonlawyers to help them understand the complex
legal rules they are required to follow. It was my belief that The Law (In Plain
English)® series would serve these goals, and over the years, my expectations
Technology development, mainly for telecommunications and computer systems, was a key factor for the interactivity and, thus, for the expansion of e-learning. This book is divided into two parts, presenting some proposals to deal with e-learning challenges, opening up a way of learning about and discussing new methodologies to increase the interaction level of classes and implementing technical tools for helping students to make better use of e-learning resources.
To my surprise and delight, The Mythical Man-Month continues
to be popular after 20 years. Over 250,000 copies are in print.
People often ask which of the opinions and recommendations
set forth in 1975 I still hold, and which have changed, and how.
Whereas I have from time to time addressed that question in lectures,
I have long wanted to essay it in writing.
Peter Gordon, now a Publishing Partner at Addison-Wesley,
has been working with me patiently and helpfully since 1980.
He proposed that we prepare an Anniversary Edition.
A global race is underway to develop and manufacture clean energy technologies, and China and
other countries are playing to win. To rise to this challenge, we need to tap into the greatest
resource we have: American ingenuity. We have the most dynamic economy in the world, and there
is no reason we can’t lead the world. But clean energy innovation, and the jobs that come with it,
don’t just happen. That’s why, in his State of the Union address, President Obama proposed an
ambitious but achievable standard for America: By 2035, we...
With link correlation information (CPRP) available
among neighboring nodes, collective ACKs are achieved
in an accumulative manner. The success of a transmis-
sion to a node (defined as the coverage probability of a
node) is no longer a binary (0/1) estimation, but a prob-
ability value between 0 and 1. Using collective ACKs, a
sender updates the coverage probability values of neigh-
boring receivers whenever (i) it transmits or (ii) over-
hears a rebroadcast message.
For example, a recent NSW EPA (2002) study of air toxics in the GMR found that ‘most
air toxic levels in NSW are low and well below current international standards and
benchmarks.’ This study also noted that concentrations of benzene and 1,3-butadiene at
some sites, such as the Sydney central business district (CBD), are ‘present at
concentrations which approached, but did not exceed, the goals for these substances’,
and concentrations of PAHs in the Sydney CBD are ‘in the vicinity of’ proposed
international goals for these pollutants (NSW EPA, 2002).
Since the first Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS) in 2001 [Pal01], the need for a stan-
dard framework has been understood, yet there has been little progress on one that is generally
accepted. A framework for digital forensics needs to be flexible enough so that it can support future
technologies and different types of incidents. Therefore, it needs to be simple and abstract. On the
other hand, if it is too simple and abstract then it is difficult to create tool requirements and test
procedures for each phase....
Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM) was the first serious effort to secure Internet
mail. The Internet Resources Task Force (IRTF) Privacy and Security Research
Group (PSRG) did the initial design. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
PEM Working Group continued development for three years, resulting in a four-
part Proposed Internet Standard published in early 1993 . PEM
is a broad standard suite, it provides encryption, authentication, message integrity
and key management. PEM supports both symmetric and asymmetric (public-
key) key management schemes.
Seeking Innovative Ways to Eliminate the Pay Gap. The Department of Labor, in
conjunction with the National Equal Pay Task Force, issued an “Equal Pay App Challenge.” This
challenge invites software developers to use publicly available data and resources to create
applications that accomplish at least one of the following goals: provide greater access to pay
data broken down by gender, race, and ethnicity; provide interactive tools for early career
coaching; help inform negotiations; and promote online mentoring.
he basic aim of every business is to enhance stakeholder value. Whether you
are keen on generating a huge response from a newspaper or magazine ad, a
direct sales letter, or an Internet site, the basic fact you need to realize is
"What is it that makes your business tick?"
A chief and extensively used form of marketing communication tool is the sales
letter. It can construct your client base and increase your sales.
What is so special about sales letters that are always read? What is it about the
sales letters that sell products? What is the secret to...
