  • The prostate is a small gland in men. It is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate is about the size and shape of a walnut. It sits low in the pelvis, below the bladder and just in front of the rectum. The prostate helps make semen, the milky fluid that carries sperm from the testicles through the penis when a man ejaculates. The prostate surrounds part of the urethra, a tube that carries urine out of the bladder and through the penis.

  • Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 91. Benign and Malignant Diseases of the Prostate Benign and Malignant Diseases of the Prostate: Introduction Benign and malignant changes in the prostate increase with age. Autopsies of men in the eighth decade of life show hyperplastic changes in 90% and malignant changes in 70% of individuals. The high prevalence of these diseases among the elderly, who often have competing causes of morbidity and mortality, mandates a risk-adapted approach to diagnosis and treatment. This can be achieved by considering these diseases as a series of states.

  • Antiandrogens Nonsteroidal antiandrogens such as flutamide, bicalutamide, and nilutamide block the binding of androgens to the receptor. When an antiandrogen is given alone, testosterone levels remain the same or increase. Compared to testosteronelowering therapies, antiandrogens cause fewer hot flashes, less of an effect on libido, less muscle wasting, fewer personality changes, and less bone loss. Gynecomastia remains a significant problem but can be alleviated in part by tamoxifen.

  • Metastatic Disease: Castrate Castration-resistant disease can manifest in many ways. For some it is a rise in PSA with no change in radiographs and no new symptoms. In others it is a rising PSA and progression in bone with or without symptoms of disease. Still others will show soft tissue disease with or without osseous metastases, and others have visceral spread. The prognosis, which is highly variable, can be predicted using nomograms designed for the castration-resistant disease state.

  • In a series published by Peirson and Nickerson, one patient had 4 grams of tissue resected for histology during transurethral prostate biopsy and this was later found to be benign. However since DRE was suspicious for cancer a perineal punch biopsy with the Silverman needle was performed and this subsequently revealed malignancy (figure 7) (Peirson and Nickerson, 1943). Consequently Kaufman et al.

To minimize this problem the name matching procedure was done phonetically. For some individuals, city of residence was used as an additional variable to ensure correct identification. 43 cases were excluded from the analysis because they were already diagnosed in their country of origin.

To date, these have been issued predominantly as AAA-rated securities by the World Bank and other development banks and some other entities in order to raise capital specifically for climate change and green growth related projects.

  • The agency has also proposed establishing a new safety standard (FMVSS No. 126) to require electronic stability control (ESC) on all light duty passenger vehicles beginning in MY 2009. 8 ESC can prevent a large percentage of loss-of-control crashes which expose vehicles to the off- road tripping mechanisms that cause most rollovers. By reducing exposure to run-off-the-road crashes, an ESC requirement would result in a large reduction in rollover fatalities.

  • Results for more recent periods show a much weaker relationship between target rate changes and other interest rates. For example, in applying the Cook and Hahn event-study approach to the 1987–1995 period, Roley and Sellon (1995) found that the bond rate rose a statistically insignificant four basis points for each percentage point change in the target funds rate. (They did, however, find some evidence that policy moves were anticipated in the latter period.) Similarly weak results for the 1989–1992 period were obtained by Radecki and Reinhart (1994)....

Cancers of the colon, lung, breast, and prostate are most prevalent in the Western world. The mortality and morbidity in India owing to all of these cancers is very low. For example, the incidence of prostate cancer is 50-fold less in India compared with the United States.

  • First, even in these practical examples, evolutionary knowledge does not often change what a physician does in his or her day-to-day practice; instead, it guides research, as in the example of jaundice. Treatment deci- sions are, and should be, based on controlled studies on humans, not on theory or on experiments performed on model organisms alone. Darwinian medicine does not often give direct practice guidelines. Second, merely listing quick applications sells evolution- ary biology short.
