There are two main reasons why the chemical process industry should be motivated
to reduce energy consumption and CO 2 emissions: rising concerns in companies,

This work inevitably sprang out of our environmental biotechnology modules at
the University of Durham, but it is not intended to be just another ‘book of the
course’. Though it is clearly rooted in these origins, it reflects our wider, and
rather varied, experiences of the field. In many respects, we have been fortunate;
teaching has undoubtedly drawn on the ‘theory’, while our own consultancy has
tended to focus us on the ‘application’.
A newcomer to the scene, aerobic granulation is on its way to becoming the hot new technology for high-efficiency wastewater treatment. Thus far, intensive research has been conducted with regard to the understanding of the mechanism of aerobic granulation in sequencing batch reactors (SBR) and its application in treating a wide variety of municipal and industrial wastewater. Private landowners or Federal Agencies responsible for cleaning up radiological environments are faced with the challenge of clearly defining the nature and extent of radiological contamination, implementing remedial alternatives, then statistically verifying that cleanup objectives have been met.
Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are the main pollinating agents for numerous
plants and fruit trees and, hence, play a key role in agriculture and
more generally in the maintenance of ecological biodiversity. Although
these social insects are not the targets of all the different agrochemical
treatments used in crop protection, they are widely affected by pesticides.
Marine birds are equally at home on land, in the air, and in the water. While many organisms can
go from land to water (amphibians, some reptiles, some insects), others generally live in only one
medium during their lives. Marine birds switch from one to the other, often daily. Such flexibility
