The editor has been involved with the safety assessment of proteins used in food production
for more than 20 years. During that time, I have answered many questions
regarding the safety of proteins developed by Monsanto. Some of the questions were
asked by those who were familiar with the safety assessment of small-molecularweight
chemicals (pesticides and food additives).

Often, solid mine wastes are dumped into streams,
destroying habitat and causing siltation and heavy metal
and other contamination. Even when such wastes are
stored out of water channels, trace materials can leach into
surface waters and infiltrate into local groundwater. Fine-
grained tailings can wash into local waterways and degrade
streams by covering and filling coarser-grained substrates.

In a literature review of DRESCHER-KADEN et al. (1992) including 900 papers published since
1977, residue data about the level of organic pollutants in German sewage sludges were
collected. 332 organic compounds with known or suspected toxic effects have been
detected in sewage sludges, 42 of them regularly, most of them within the range of g/kg to

We report the biochemical characterization of calhepatin, a calcium-binding protein of the S100 family, isolated from lungﬁsh (Lepidosiren paradoxa) liver.
