Finally, student composition may operate as an employment amenity for teachers and administrators, reducing the salaries that the school must pay and increasing the quality of teachers that can be hired for any fixed salary (Antos and Rosen, 1975).

  • The price premium charged for competitive-market products depends on several factors including the price of standard offer or default service, the availability of incentives to green power marketers or suppliers, and the cost of renewable energy generation available in the regional market. Some marketers have charged prices close to or even below the default market price in recent years (e.g., in Texas); others have offered fixed-price products, providing customers with protection against increasing prices for a specified period of time, usually one year.

  • Particularly for rented apartments, key control by apartment management is an important issue. Large jury awards have been made to victims of crimes in apartments because of negligent key control and use of a master key. A resident gives up some rights when they move into a multi-residential property. In most cases, the resident, per written agreement, cannot add or replace the lock on their door unless management is given an extra key. By doing this, the management assumes the responsibility of and legal liability for key control.

  • The writing of second language learners of English often presents problems that are different from those found in the writing of native English speaking students. These include culturally conditioned rhetorical patterns that sound ‘strange’ to the native speaker ear as well as unfamiliar grammatical errors that are simply not found in native speaker writing.

  • The current RSS polling mechanism has been said to scale well because “its cost is almost directly propor- tional to the number of subscribers” [5]. In fact, linear cost is typically an indicator of poor scaling properties, especially when that cost is focused on one member of a distributed system. It is likely that the further growth of RSS adoption will be badly stunted, without substantial change to the way micronews is distributed.

  • Institutions and individuals involved in human subjects research may establish financial relationships related to or separate from particular research projects. Those financial relationships may create financial interests of monetary value, such as payments for services, equity interests, or intellectual property rights. A financial interest related to a research study may be a conflicting financial interest. The Department recognizes that some conflicting financial interests in research may affect the rights and welfare of human subjects.

  • Fedwire securities are processed individually, in much the same way that Fedwire funds transfers are processed, and participants initiate securi- ties transfers in the same manner, using either a computer connection or the telephone. When the Federal Reserve receives a request to transfer a security, for example as a result of the sale of securities, it determines that the security is held in safekeeping for the institution requesting the transfer and withdraws the security from the institution’s safekeeping account.

  • The internationalization of financial services¾ eliminating discrimination in the treatment between foreign and domestic financial services providers and removing barriers to the cross-border provision of financial services¾ is of global interest, but of special interest to Asia. Most of Asia limits entry of foreign financial firms much more than otherwise comparable countries. Empirical evidence for Asia¾ and other countries¾ suggests that this leads to slower institutional development and more costly financial services provision.

  • This study analyzes and provides empirical tests of early warning indicators of banking and currency crises in emerging economies. The aim is to identify key empirical regularities in the run-up to banking and currency crises that would enable officials and private market participants to recognize vulnerability to financial crises at an earlier stage. This, in turn, should make it easier to motivate the corrective policy actions that would prevent such crises from actually taking place.

  • Previous research provides evidence for a conceptual distinction between self-assessed and objective knowledge, and relatively little is known about the relationship between knowledge and information search. The current research provides empirical evidence for differentiating the two knowledge types. Furthermore, it suggests that the relative effects of the two types of knowledge on pre-purchase information search depend on the type of information source.

  • This paper focuses on developing an empirical strategy for measuring the effect of pollution on health. Specifically, I look at the effect of air pollution on children's hospitalization for asthma. Childhood asthma is of particular interest for two reasons: 1) asthma is the leading chronic condition affecting children; and 2) current pollution standards are based on adult health responses to pollution and children face a greater risk from pollution exposure due to the sensitivity of their developing biological systems. This study builds on earlier work in five ways.

Earnings warnings are any earnings-related management voluntary disclosures made prior to the earnings announcement date.1 Firms use earnings warnings to provide timely information to their shareholders and investors as well as financial analysts regarding their expected current period performance prior to the earnings announcement date (Ip [1997], McLean [2001] and Stone [2002]).

  • Thus, the study of mutual funds in emerging markets is overdue for those who need a fuller understanding of their investment conditions. In addition, this would allow an out-of- sample test to challenge existing asset pricing models and lead to the development of new empirical models. This study seeks to shed light on mutual fund investment in emerging markets and specifically focuses on three issues: performance, determinants of performance and the role of liquidity on performance and performance measure.

I became interested in this industry for professional reasons during the mid-1990s, a period when the industry was making the jump from a premium service industry for mostly professional users to a truly mass market. In my capacity as an applied industrial organisation economist, I had the unique opportunity of evaluating the business plans and strategies of a large number of mobile telecommunications firms inside and outside Europe.

  • In French-speaking African countries reproductive health services for men, including access to condoms and vasectomy services, and access to services for disease prevention and treat- ment, have been handicapped by unavailability, lack of information, cultural obstacles, and poor quality of services. Many of the obstacles that stand in the way of delivering more and better health care to women and children affect men as well. In addition, the notion that family planning has little to do with men has limited men’s access to services.

Cross-cutting themes such as leadership in policing, use of force, and understanding how the law shapes (or fails to shape) police practice are relevant to students of police studies, practitioners, and scholars alike.
