  • The second chapter case study by Rosso et al. presents a medical survey that tests professional drivers for the presence of various psychoactive substances. Positives were identified by using a commercially available immunoassay rapid kit test which indicates consumption of psychoactive drugs. This is of interest and important since the dependence on drugs may pose a risk to drivers in their profession affecting their reaction time and driving judgment. This is one of the first and important contributions to the literature in this area.

  • Developing a new functional food is an expensive process. Food companies have traditionally funded research for new food product formulations but for functional foods, the stakes are higher—for both food companies and con- sumers. Government investment in basic and applied research will promote the development of functional foods, but additional incentives are needed to reward private companies that pioneer new health claims.

  • It is beyond the scope of this chapter to review in detail the different methods of detection, two published papers by Paneleaukou et al (2009), and Fehm et al (2005) have extensively reviewed the pros and cons of the different detection methods. In summary, PCR methods have a high rate of false positive results, density gradient centrifugation may be associated with increased lost of circulating cells whereas immunomagnetic separation may not recognize tumor cells which do not express EpCAM and does not differentiate between malignant and benign prostate cells.

  • everal advantageous effects of vitamin C on human health have been stressed, such as the relationship between high plasma vitamin C concentration and reduced gastric cancer risk found in EPIC study (Jenab et al., 2006). Besides the antioxidant activity of vitamin C, which may explain its protective role against gastric cancer risk, several other activities could play a role, such as its ability to modulate cell growth kinetics and its putative antimicrobial activity, for example against Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria responsible for chronic ulcer and even stomach cancer.

  • Over the last decade in the WHO European Region the health profes- sions have been under some pressure to promote patient education* as a major addition to pharmacological, physical and other forms of thera- py. Nevertheless, health care providers still need efficient educational programmes* in the long-term management* of chronic diseases*. Cur- rent programmes do not usually include educational methods or psy- chological support of patients. Their methodology has never been adequately formalized and this creates difficulties in educating other health care providers*.

  • For a theoretical inquiry into the course of civilized life as it runs in the immediate present, therefore, aud as it is running into the proximate future, no single factor in the cultural situation has an importance equal to that of the business man and his work. This of course applies with peculiar force to an inquiry into the economic life of a modem community. In so far as the theorist aims to explain the specifically modern economic phenomena, his line of approach must be from the businessman's standpoint, since it is from that standpoint...

  • Two major influences underpin Michael Shaw’s work, the first is Minimalist sculpture and the theories of Donald Judd; the second is Piero della Francesca and his: book on the Five Regular Solids (Libellus de Quinque Corporibus Regularibus) which describes innovative interpretations of solid geometry. The influence of minimalist sculpture focuses on Judd’s concept of ‘specific objects’ where, as Judd writes ‘the shape, image, colour and surface are single’.

The first chapter by Oraby et al. describes the occurrence of syringe reuse reported in a Canadian health care setting on approximately 1,400 patients in the province of Alberta. Multiple syringe re-use events may act as a vector to transmit both RNA and DNA viruses.

  • The requirement for EU members to maintain a supportive framework for renewables is now underpinned by the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC). In 2009, the 27 EU member states formally committed to green energy production targets as set out in the directive. The Renewable Energy Directive incorporates a mandatory target of achieving a 20% share of energy from renewable sources in overall EU gross final energy consumption by 2020.

  • Obviously, in this case we cannot fully eliminate the identification and causality problem because firms’ profits/losses may affect their demand for credit as well. In order to circumvent this problem (at least partly) we use in addition an interaction variable between the profitability dummy and the lagged value of the access to credit variable. The rationale is to test whether long-term enterprise-bank relations are associated with the firm’s viability.

  • The idea of establishing infrastructure banks to help finance needed investment is not new to the United States. As of 2010, 32 states and Puerto Rico already had state infrastructure banks in operation, using them to enter into more than 700 loan agreements worth $6.5 billion. 24 A handful of banks were established in the 1990s as part of a limited federal pilot program, which was expanded in 2005 to include all states.

On the Armature panel in the Edit buttons, enable the Auto IK option. Use Grab mode (G-key) to move the hand. This time, translating the hand bone pulls the rest of the arm around with it, letting you create the pose much more intuitively. When you have the hand close to what looks like a decent pose for the beginning of a wave motion, disable Auto IK.

  • Caffeine, a nonselective adenosine A1 and A2A receptor antagonist, is the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world. Evidence demonstrates that caffeine and selective adenosine A2A antagonists interact with the neuronal systems involved in drug reinforcement, locomotor sensitization, and therapeutic effect in Parkinson's disease (PD). Evidence also indicates that low doses of caffeine and a selective adenosine A2A antagonist SCH58261 elicit locomotor stimulation whereas high doses of these drugs exert locomotor...

  • Although rare, cytology of signet ring cell melanoma has been on record. Tsang et al. (1993) documented a case that manifested as a groin mass in a patient who had undergone below knee amputation for superficial spreading melanoma of the right foot. FNA smears in this case showed poorly cohesive, large cells with eccentric nuclei, most of which exhibited signet ring morphology. Only a small proportion of cells displayed melanin pigment clinching the right diagnosis.

  • The potential for growth in trade and investment over the next decade and beyond is huge, if protectionist pressures can be avoided and other challenges addressed. Bilaterally and multilaterally we will work to improve UK businesses’ access to opportunities. Our approach is global and will include markets where the UK is already strong, for example the EU Single Market, together with the fast-growing emerging markets that play an increasingly large role in global trade and investment. Britain is able to build upon its existing strong relationships with many countries across the world....

  • This paper models two key channels of contagion in nancial systems by which default may spread from one institution to another. The primary focus is on how losses can potentially spread via the complex network of direct counterparty exposures following an initial default. But, as Cifuentes et al (2005) and Shin (2008) stress, the knock-on effects of distress at some nancial institutions on asset prices can force other nancial entities to write down the value of their assets, and we also model the potential for this effect to trigger further rounds of default.
