Today’s society is fascinated by crime. Crime and deviance have
taken on a cultural significance they never previously had. As a
result, crime is a hot topic in the media and one that leads people to
be continually exposed to criminal events, portrayals of those who
commit them, and the suffering of victims. Most of the crime we
experience, we experience vicariously. But the bias in crime reporting
is such that it is easy to get the wrong idea about the reality of crime.
Positive human functioning is perhaps most remarkable when evident
in contexts of significant life challenge and adversity. It is then, when
individuals are being tested, that much becomes known about human
strengths—what they are, how they come about, how they are nurtured or
undermined. The growing literature on human resilience addresses this
juxtaposition of being well in the face of difficulty.
Our study panel began deliberations with significantly divergent
views on the meaning of the concept of “psychological consequences”
and the definition of terrorism. In addition we had many perspectives on
the appropriate preventive and therapeutic roles of public health and
mental health systems with respect to the psychological consequences of
terrorism. We agreed that terrorism affected humans in all walks of life
and that societal terrorists are as diverse as the individuals they terrorize
This book began as a Ph.D. thesis, supervised in its early stages by
Michael Stocker, and then by Kimon Lycos. I am extraordinarily
fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with these two
philosophers, and I owe a great deal to both of them.
I thank Michael Stocker for the wonderful work he has done in
ethics, for it is this more than anything else which ignited my
interest in moral psychology. I also thank him for urging me to
begin The Moral Self, and for the many stimulating, productive
discussions we had in Melbourne prior to his departure for the
During the past decade, consultation activities that
focus on managers and senior leaders in organizations
have increasingly been referred to as executive
coaching. This term has begun to take on a technical
meaning within the field of organization development,
yet the area of practice has suffered significantly
from a relative lack of specific attention to it
in the professional literature.
This book is about the promises and failures of community mental health. It is also about
hope and recovery. During the past 50 years, the treatment of persons with serious mental
illness has undergone a radical transformation. Significant advances in research and the
influence of a growing consumer advocacy movement are forcefully shaping a brave new
world in community mental health. At the same time, tremendous suffering persists for
those afflicted by serious mental illness.
This book examines general changes in the regulation of the health professions in
the United Kingdom from a social scientific perspective. It also considers the
historical and contemporary development of regulation for a selection of key
occupational groups in this context, with reference to wider debates about the
health professions. Interest in new approaches to regulation was prompted by the
fact that, by the late 1990s, a number of important shifts were taking place in relation
to such groups in this country. These included the following trends.
John Deereis the world‟s leading manufacturer of farm equipment. In the fall of 2010, the company launched a giveaways campaign, in which the prize was one of its tractors customized by a famous automobile designer.
“In a departure from traditional equipment promotions, John Deere has launched its unique Big Buck customized 4020 tractor giveaway, as well as significant purchase incentives on utility tractors for customers for the end of 2009 and into 2010,” read the press releaseannouncing the campaign.

While age and experience appear to result in differences in perceptions of the value of the
MBA, gender has also emerged as a significant predictor (Powell & Butterfield, 2003). A
study of Hong Kong executive business students (Thompson & Gui, 2000) found it was more
important for men than women to become better at one‟s job and obtain more promising
career switching opportunities.
Raising capital gains taxes will lower the return on some types of assets, and could decrease investment. If investors decrease
stock holdings, and businesses rely on financing from in-state investors, then a state’s economy could grow more slowly. But
a debate on capital gains taxes in the 1980s and 1990s inspired a considerable body of research, which ultimately found that
these taxes have little impact on long-term investment.

Since 2005, there have been significant changes in the threat landscape. Fraudsters
have continued to develop and deploy more sophisticated, effective, and malicious
methods to compromise authentication mechanisms and gain unauthorized access
to customers’ online accounts. Rapidly growing organized criminal groups have
become more specialized in financial fraud and have been successful in
compromising an increasing array of controls.
Recent studies have tested for particulate absorption through sampling leaves and
examining the product of washing from broadleaved trees (plane, lime, elm, cherry
and ash). Beckett et al. (2000b) sampled from five urban polluted sites within the
South East of England2
, which were located in close proximity to road traffic. Using
foliage density estimates, the total insoluble particle load per tree was found to vary
between 41 and 2936 grams.
In the general field of Environmental Psychology an increasing number of studies propose that subjects’ general well-being
can be significantly increased as a result of contact with environments considered to have high aesthetic value. The present
study has attempted to study the possible effects of the contemplation of everyday landscapes on citizens’ emotional well-
being, identifying some of the main affective responses associated with aesthetic judgements of urban landscapes.
Eating a good and balanced diet is
essential to our health and wellbeing, but
sitting down to a family or group meal also
provides us with an opportunity to
socialise. And, since enjoying good food
and pleasant company contributes to our
psychological wellbeing, group or family
mealtimes should be encouraged.
Sometimes, particularly if the task of
eating is very messy and personal dignity
is at stake, the diner may choose to eat
alone, with help at hand, if necessary.
People who live alone obviously have no
choice but to eat alone; and the task of
preparing a meal...
Because science is always advancing, OPP periodically updates and changes the way it
approaches pesticide risk assessments. Under FIFRA and FFDCA, the national pesticide
program is one of the most data-rich programs at EPA, providing significant information
upon which to make pesticide decisions. Our goal is a more comprehensive and consistent
evaluation of potential risks of pesticides, including all potential routes of exposure.
Therapeutic patient education* has brought about a significant de-
crease in the number of hospital admissions of patients with bronchial
asthma or diabetic coma. In addition to a decrease of lower limb am-
putations it has resulted in a better quality of life by delaying amputa-
tions in 75% of cases
There is a need to emphasize the role of patients’ families and
significant others in long-term care.
A comparative study of HIV associated
pulmonary tuberculosis (HIV-PTB) was
carried out in Chest Clinics situated in Benin
and Irrua environs of Edo State, Nigeria,
using microscopical and serological
methods. In Irrua environs, HIV-PTB coinfection
is higher in females (12.5%) than in
males (9.2%) but not statistically significant
(P 0.05). In Benin, HIV-PTB is also higher
in females (11.3%) than in males (7.2%) but
not statistically significant (P 0.05). In
Benin, PTB is statistically high among 0.05)....
