OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) is a collaborative initiative to
develop and implement a sustainable Open Access publication model for academic books in
the Humanities and Social Sciences. The OAPEN Library aims to improve the visibility and
usability of high quality academic research by aggregating peer reviewed Open Access
publications from across Europe.
The year 2008 marked the 100th anniversary of the Finnish Academy of
Sciences and Letters. On the occasion, the disciplinary groups of the Academy
of Sciences and Letters organized a series of mini-conferences focused on timely
research topics (see http://www.acadsci.fi/100y.htm). The Group of Geosciences
organized two events: the year was opened with a symposium entitled From the
Earth’s Core to Outer Space (January 9–11) and, during the spring and summer
the Exhibition of Geoscientific Expeditions was open to the general public at
the University of Helsinki Museum Arppeanum.
