  • As the world of politics and public affairs has gradually changed beyond recognition over the past two decades, journalism too has been transformed. Yet the study of news and journalism often seems stuck with ideas and debates which have lost much of their critical purchase. Journalism is at a crossroads: it needs to reaffirm core values and rediscover key activities, almost certainly in new forms, or it risks losing its distinctive character as well as its commercial basis.

  • Event recognition methods can be roughly categorized into model-based methods and appearance-based techniques. Model-based approaches relied on various models, includ- ing HMM [35], coupled HMM [3], and Dynamic Bayesian Network [33], to model the temporal evolution. The relationships among different body parts and regions are also modeled in [3], [35], in which object tracking needs to be conducted at first before model learning.

  • An event fact sheet differs from a press release in that it includes only the bare bones of the event, answering the important questions of who, what, where, when, and why. It can be sent either in lieu of or in conjunction with a press release. Event fact sheets should be sent to the Calendar/Events Editor. Every publication’s deadline differs slightly, but most are around two weeks before publication. Monthly magazines will have earlier deadlines. Check with the publication for an exact deadline. See Appendix 3 for a sample event fact sheet.

  • INTRODUCTION Medical countermeasures are vital to protect the public against acts of terrorism and other public health emergencies. The need for an effec- tive system of dispensing medical countermeasures gained recognition in 1979 after the accidental release of radionuclides from the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. If emissions had been higher, widespread dispensing of the countermeasure potassium iodide would have been necessary to prevent future cases of thyroid cancer among those living nearby or downwind.

The dramatic rise and ubiquity of self-help during the mid- to late twentieth century positions it high among other healthcare institutions such as drug rehabilitation, the health maintenance organization (HMO), and patient rights as an integral part of the landscape marking our daily lives.

  • The teaching and the practicing of corporate finance are more challenging and exciting than ever before. The last decade has seen fundamental changes in financial markets and financial instruments. In the early years of the 21st century, we still see announcements in the financial press about such matters as takeovers, junk bonds, financial restructuring, initial public offerings, bankruptcy, and derivatives. In addition, there is the new recognition of “real” options (Chapters 21 and 22), private equity and venture capital (Chapter 19), and the disappearing dividend (Chapter 18).
