All the code examples in this book are coded as Java applets so that they
can be used with Java-enabled Web browsers and published on the Web. At
the time of this writing, the current release of Java is release 1.1.5 with
version 1.2 just appearing as a developer release. Java versions 1.1 and later
add many new features, such as a completely new event model, but many
Web browsers have yet to fully incorporate these new features. Therefore,
the applets in this book are coded to be compatible with the earlier Java
1.0.2 standard so that they work with the widest variety of web browser....
This is the first book of examples from the Theory of Probability. This topic is not my favourite,
however, thanks to my former colleague, Ole Jørsboe, I somehow managed to get an idea of what it is
all about. The way I have treated the topic will often diverge from the more professional treatment.
On the other hand, it will probably also be closer to the way of thinking which is more common among
many readers, because I also had to start from scratch.
Unfortunately errors cannot be avoided in a first edition of a work of this type. However, the author
has tried to put...

There is a new method of rendering that was recently developed. It is called radiosity.
It does something all the other rendering methods don't do: it figures out the
relationship in the scene of all the objects present. For example, in real life, if you take
a bright colored ball and put it into a white room, the walls of the room are going to
reflect a little bit of color from the ball, making them look a little reddish for example.
This is not possible in raytracing, since it does not bounce rays off of matte objects,
such as a wall.
You can compare the above...
In most instances the old signs which indicated the callings of shopkeepers have been swept away. Indeed, the
three brass balls of the pawn-broker and the pole of the barber are all that are left of signs of the olden time.
Round the barber's pole gather much curious fact and fiction. So many suggestions have been put forth as to
its origin and meaning that the student of history is puzzled to give a correct solution. One circumstance is
clear: its origin goes back to far distant times. An attempt is made in "The Athenian Oracle" (i. 334), to trace
the remote origin of the...
If ever there was a match made in heaven, it’s the marriage of baseball and statistics and,
as in all happy marriages, each partner contributes its most valuable assets:
• Baseball, its sheer visual beauty, joy of competition, the thrill of bat meeting ball,
ball meeting glove, pregnant pauses that culminate in seconds of excitement and
agony. As the eminent philosopher–baseball fan Morris R. Cohen put it, an “extraordinarily
rich multiplicity of movements.”
• Statistics and their pliability as an analytical tool.
The Metamorphosis. The Transformation. The Makeover.
From fairy tales to Walt Disney cartoons to diet pill ads to home improvement television shows, we all
have a natural interest in witnessing change taking place before our eyes. The ugly duckling becomes the
swan. The neglected step-sister is transformed into a gorgeous beauty at the prince’s ball. The rundown
house is made over into the jewel of the neighborhood. When we see these metamorphoses happening to
others, we are inspired to emulate these same kinds of changes in our lives.
Welcome to the often fascinating, sometimes frustrating, and almost
always fun game of golf. It is a sport that can be played for a lifetime,
yet can never be mastered completely. Some call it a good walk spoiled,
but they probably have never experienced the thrill of hitting a ball high
into the air in exactly the right direction, or the pleasure of making a
long putt for a birdie. Doing either of those things takes a fair bit of
learning, since golf is a complicated game. But put forth a patient effort,
and positive results will eventually follow.
Welcome to Coaching Baseball For Dummies, a book dedicated to helping
and teaching all the wonderful volunteer coaches who sign up to
introduce kids to this magnificent sport that is played and enjoyed by millions
around the world. Youngsters love the thrill of putting on the colorful
uniform on game day, exchanging high-fives with teammates and coaches
after making great catches and delivering clutch hits, and collecting grass
stains diving for ground balls and sliding into second base.
It was definitely a capital-K Knock, the kind of knock they Foley in for police flicks, with a lot
of ominous reverb that cuts off sharply, whang, whang, whang. The thunder of authority on
two legs. It even penetrated my headphones, shook all the way down to my balls with the
premonition of something awful about to come.

To put first things first, I’d like to make it plain that I
believe playing baseball should be fun, especially for
the young. For their individual development, as well as for
the enjoyment of doing for themselves and by themselves,
they should have the minimum of parental playing-field
supervision and adult instruction.
It’s absolutely essential that boys—and girls, if they’re part
of the gang or playing softball among themselves—spend
their early years learning to swing a bat and catch a ball. The
fundamentals (and the fun) must come first....
