  • This paper presents methods for a qualitative, unbiased comparison of lexical association measures and the results we have obtained for adjective-noun pairs and preposition-noun-verb triples extracted from German corpora. In our approach, we compare the entire list of candidates, sorted according to the particular measures, to a reference set of manually identified “true positives”. We also show how estimates for the very large number of hapaxlegomena and double occurrences can be inferred from random samples. ...

  • As in many other disciplines, research methodology in language program evaluation is classified into different paradigms by different scholars. No matter what classification each researcher follows, research in language program evaluation can be conducted according to two general approaches: positivistic/quantitative and naturalistic/qualitative.

  • Weeds severely affect crop quality and yield. Therefore, successful farming relies on their control by coordinated management approaches. Among these, chemical herbicides are of key importance. Their development and commercialization began in the 1940's and they allowed for a qualitative increase in crop yield and quality when it was most needed. This book blends review chapters with scientific studies, creating an overview of some the current trends in the field of herbicides.

  • A sequential explanatory mixed methods approach was chosen for this study as the intention was to use the qualitative results to ‘assist in explaining and interpreting the findings of a primarily quantitative study’ (Cresswell, 2003, p 215). Scores from a current IELTS Test (Test 2) and an earlier one (Test 1) provided quantitative data for analysis. Interviews were conducted after Test 2 with almost all of the participants. A combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches such as this is justified by many researchers in human research.

  • Taking into consideration the outstanding importance of studying and applying the biological means to remove or mitigate the harmful effects of global pollution on the natural environment, as direct consequences of quantitative expansion and qualitative diversification of persistent and hazardous contaminants, the present book provides useful information regarding New Approaches and Prospective Applications in Environmental Biotechnology.

  • This book is intended for use in two different ways. Firstly, we hope that it will prove a valuable guide to students undertaking independent research projects in human geography in the form of undergraduate or master’s-level dissertations. Secondly, the book may be used as an accompanying text for taught courses that aim to introduce students to research methods. The text is unusual in its coverage of both quantitative and qualitative approaches to the subject, and does not set out to endorse any particular set of research methodologies at the expense of any other.

  • The first edition of this text was written in the early 1990s. Since then, the field of clinical research methods has continued to develop rapidly, and this second edition has been extensively updated to reflect these developments. We have also tried to make the whole book more user friendly, both in layout and in content. All chapters now have summaries and boxes highlighting the key points, and we have provided many more illustrative examples. The biggest area of change is in our treatment of qualitative methods.

  • Cement manufacturing is an energy-intensive process due to the high temperatures required in the kilns for clinkerization. The use of alternative fuels to replace conventional fuels, in particular coal, is a widespread practice and can contribute to improving the global warming impact and total environmental footprint of the cement industry.

  • Municipal bond analysis requires a sophisticated mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques for trading and management activities. Even though much of the quantitative component is automated and enriched by a tremendous amount of data, much of the critical buying and selling decisions are based on individualized, qualitative judgments. The actual use of formal quantitative portfolio models vary from institution to institution. At one extreme, typified by rigorous investment constraints, the model recommendations are followed precisely.

  • Editors bring together a diverse group of scholars who share valuable qualitative research techniques and rich case examples. Qualitative methodologies and the different paradigms which guide them can be seen as both an alternative and complementary approach to quantification and positivism in social, personality, developmental, health, clinical, counseling, community, and school psychology.

  • This is the first attempt to write the history of smoking in this country from the social point of view. There have been many books written about tobacco--F.W. Fairholt's "History of Tobacco," 1859, and the "Tobacco" (1857) of Andrew Steinmetz, are still valuable authorities--but hitherto no one has told the story of the fluctuations of fashion in respect of the practice of smoking.

  • The book is divided into four main parts: key issues in researching language learning/teaching, data collection, data analysis and writing up research. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies are discussed, alongside popular mixed-methods approaches, such as triangulated studies, thus covering many of the methods commonly employed in the field.

  • This study uses what Cresswell (2003) refers to as a ‘mixed methods approach’, one that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and a ‘sequential explanatory strategy’ in which the collection and analysis of the quantitative data is followed by the collection and analysis of the qualitative data (p 215).

  • As currently taught, the introductory course in analytical chemistry emphasizes quantitative (and sometimes qualitative) methods of analysis coupled with a heavy dose of equilibrium chemistry. Analytical chemistry, however, is more than equilibrium chemistry and a collection of analytical methods; it is an approach to solving chemical problems. Although discussing different methods is important, that discussion should not come at the expense of other equally important topics.

  • This book discusses an emerging approach to architecture in which building performance is a guiding design principle. This architecture places broadly defined performance above, or on a par with, form-making; it utilizes digital technologies of quantitative and qualitative performance-based simulation to offer a comprehensive new approach to the design of the built environment.
