  • This is an exciting time for professionals associated with physical activity and the health professions. We have seen a substantial increase in the amount and type of research being conducted. Qualitative research has grown in popularity and has gained respect as a viable method of answering important research questions. Despite its broad appeal and inclusion in many disciplines, however, qualitative research often has an ethereal or mystical feel to it, particularly for those practitioners with strong roots in physical activity and the health professions.

Since then, the field of clinical research methods has continued to develop rapidly, and this second edition has been extensively updated to reflect these developments. We have also tried to make the whole book more user friendly, both in layout and in content. All chapters now have summaries and boxes highlighting the key points, and we have provided many more illustrative examples. The biggest area of change is in our treatment of qualitative methods.

  • When I wrote my first book, Qualitative Choice Analysis, in the mid1980s, the field had reached a critical juncture. The breakthrough concepts that defined the field had been made. The basic models – mainly logit and nested logit – had been introduced, and the statistical and economic properties of these models had been derived. Applications had proven successful in many different areas, including transportation, energy, housing, and marketing – to name only a few. The field is at a similar juncture today for a new generation of procedures.

  • This paper presents methods for a qualitative, unbiased comparison of lexical association measures and the results we have obtained for adjective-noun pairs and preposition-noun-verb triples extracted from German corpora.   • Thomas Ahrens Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at the London School of Economics where he has been working since 1996. His research is mostly qualitative. It is broadly concerned with accounting and organisational process. Thomas has compared management accounting practices in contemporary British and German firms and studied the uses of performance measurement systems in a large U.K. restaurant chain. He has also written on comparative and case study research in accounting. Thomas’ latest research project is investigating performance measurement in British and German banks.

  • In conclusion, the results reported herewith show a significant relationship between epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry, but coefficients of variation were considerably lower for bacterial counts estimated by flow cytometry than epifluorescence microscopy.
