This is an exciting time for professionals associated with physical
activity and the health professions. We have seen a substantial
increase in the amount and type of research being conducted.
Qualitative research has grown in popularity and has gained
respect as a viable method of answering important research questions.
Despite its broad appeal and inclusion in many disciplines,
however, qualitative research often has an ethereal or mystical
feel to it, particularly for those practitioners with strong roots in
physical activity and the health professions.
Presents a new methodology for helping members of a group to arrive at carefully reasoned value judgments or decisions. The new procedure, called "qualitative controlled feedback," presents each group member with a common question, and each member is asked independently for both an answer to the question, and for reasons which he feels justify his answer. An intermediary collects all stated reason......
This paper presents methods for a qualitative, unbiased comparison of lexical association measures and the results we have obtained for adjective-noun pairs and preposition-noun-verb triples extracted from German corpora. In our approach, we compare the entire list of candidates, sorted according to the particular measures, to a reference set of manually identified “true positives”. We also show how estimates for the very large number of hapaxlegomena and double occurrences can be inferred from random samples.
This paper describes the application of the PARADISE evaluation framework to the corpus of 662 human-computer dialogues collected in the June 2000 Darpa Communicator data collection. We describe results based on the standard logfile metrics as well as results based on additional qualitative metrics derived using the DATE dialogue act tagging scheme. We show that performance models derived via using the standard metrics can account for 37% of the variance in user satisfaction, and that the addition of DATE metrics improved the models by an absolute 5%. ...
In this chapter you will learn: To define qualitative research, to explore the popularity of qualitative research, to understand why qualitative research is not held in high esteem by some practitioners and academicians, to learn about focus groups and their tremendous popularity,...
In the past years, a number of lexical association measures have been studied to help extract new scientific terminology or general-language collocations. The implicit assumption of this research was that newly designed term measures involving more sophisticated statistical criteria would outperform simple counts of cooccurrence frequencies. We here explicitly test this assumption.
After completing this chapter, students will be able to: Describe qualitative research and its assumptions, identify examples of qualitative research, explain analytic induction Explain the Interaction Model for Research Design used for qualitative research Explain the role of a research question in qualitative research Assess the effectiveness of research questions in qualitative research
The learning objectives for this chapter include: Explain how qualitative research differs from quantitative research, identify the role of the researcher and explain its potential effects on the research process, read the research report and identify the focus or objective of the project,....
In this chapter students will be able to: Distinguish among the various forms of qualitative research methods; identify the basic steps or process the researcher used to collect data; evaluate the method used for its ability to collect data that are valid, reliable, and credible;...
The purpose of this book is to consciously deal with the fact that, most essentially,
the field of competitive intelligence embraces techniques of analysis that
rely upon intuition, subjective analysis, and qualitative (as juxtaposed to scientific
or quantitative) data. The fact that competitive intelligence often relies
upon scientific techniques and state-of-the-art technology, however, has tended
to cloud this crucial issue.
Thomas Ahrens Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at the London School of
Economics where he has been working since 1996. His research is mostly qualitative.
It is broadly concerned with accounting and organisational process. Thomas has
compared management accounting practices in contemporary British and German firms
and studied the uses of performance measurement systems in a large U.K. restaurant
chain. He has also written on comparative and case study research in accounting.
Thomas’ latest research project is investigating performance measurement in British and

While many HIV-infected individuals do not wish to have children, others desire children despite their
infected status. The desire and intent to have children among HIV-infected individuals may increase
because of improved quality of life and survival following commencement of anti-retroviral treatment. In
developing countries such as South Africa, where the largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS
worldwide reside, specific government reproductive health policy and service provision for HIV-infected
individuals is underdeveloped.
When I wrote my first book, Qualitative Choice Analysis, in the mid1980s, the field had reached a critical juncture. The breakthrough concepts that defined the field had been made. The basic models – mainly logit and nested logit – had been introduced, and the statistical and economic properties of these models had been derived. Applications had proven successful in many different areas, including transportation, energy, housing, and marketing – to name only a few. The field is at a similar juncture today for a new generation of procedures.
