  • Failure to adequately define [sample] support has long been a source of confusion in site characterization and remediation because risk due to long-term exposure may involve areal supports of hundreds or thousands of square meters; removal by backhoe or front-end loader may involve minimum remediation units of 5 or 10 m2; and sample measurements may be taken on soil cores only a few centimeters in diameter. (Englund and Heravi, 1994) The importance of this observation cannot be overstated.

  • The UK Government and devolved administrations are committed to delivering clean air for a good quality of life. We have come a long way since the smogs of the 1950s. We have achieved cleaner air through regulating emissions from industrial processes, progressively tightening emissions and fuel standards for road vehicles and controlling smoke from domestic premises. But there are still sometimes levels of pollution that can significantly harm human health and the environment.

  • To research the volume and components of solid waste, we surveyed household waste with three different incomes (high, middle and low incomes). Then waste is separated into 34 waste components and 9 main waste groups containing organic waste (easily decomposed waste such as vegetable, root, fruit, left food.. to make the compost and difficultly decomposed waste), paper, plastic, metal, glass, rubber and leather, cloth, dangerous substance, and other waste. Besides, definition of all groups of waste is also discussed. ...

  • Wireless and Mobile Internet have changed the way people and businesses operate. Communication from any Internet access point, including wireless networks such as UMTS, GPRS or WLAN has enabled organizations to have a mobile workforce. However, networked applications such as web, email, streaming multimedia etc. rely upon the ability of timely data delivery. The achievable throughput is a quality measure for the very task of a communication system, which is to transport data in time. Throughput is thus one of the most essential enablers for networked applications.

  • What can’t be measured can’t be improved. Even though Supply Chain Management is the most talked about topic today, currently no tool is available to measure any manufacturing organizations’ supply chain efficiency. Unlike productivity and or quality measurement, where the parameter can be measured objectively and expressed in unit or ratio, supply chain measurement is currently more of a qualitative statement.

  • Many important decisions are based on the results of chemical quantitative analysis; the results are used, for example, to estimate yields, to check materials against specifications or statutory limits, or to estimate monetary value. Whenever decisions are based on analytical results, it is important to have some indication of the quality of the results, that is, the extent to which they can be relied on for the purpose in hand.

  • The effect of chitosan, glucose and chitosan–glucose complex (CGC) on the microbial and postharvest quality of shiitake (Lentinus edodes) mushroom stored at 4 ± 1 C for 16 days was investigated. Mushroom weight loss, respiration rate, firmness, ascorbic acid, total soluble solids, microbial and sensory quality were measured. The results indicate that treatment with CGC coating maintained tissue firmness, inhibited increase of respiration rate, reduced microorganism counts, e.g., pseudomonads, yeasts and moulds, compared to uncoated control mushroom.

  • All have been, more or less, a response to three chronic problems: U.S. schools fare badly in international comparisons, the school dropout rate is high and probably rising, and a huge gap in achievement between whites and blacks (with Hispanics in the middle on most measures) emerges as early as age three...

  • Soil provides a list of services to all users of terrestrial ecosystems and is crucial to our agricultural societies. From an anthropogenic point of view, soil quality may be then measured in terms of the services the soil provides to our society. The value of soil services to human societies has changed during history and thus the value we give to soils has also changed over time as it depends upon the economic and cultural basis of a society for a given context. While throughout history human awareness of the soil services has been mainly reduced to food, fibre and...
