This book discusses an emerging approach to
architecture in which building performance is a
guiding design principle. This architecture places
broadly defined performance above, or on a par
with, form-making; it utilizes digital technologies of
quantitative and qualitative performance-based
simulation to offer a comprehensive new approach
to the design of the built environment.
A project of this magnitude and scope is never the work of only one person. It
requires the support of many individuals. Such is the case here, and I mention some
of those individuals below. I am indebted to them and many others for sharing their
knowledge and giving me opportunities over the years to gain valuable experience
and achieve intellectual growth.
I’m deeply indebted to Marc Holzer, of Rutgers University-Newark, for the
inspiration to promote government performance and the countless learning and
growth opportunities he has provided me....
With database concepts and theories clearly explained in Oracle's context, readers quickly learn how to fully leverage Oracle's performance and scalability capabilities at every stage of designing and developing an Oracle-based enterprise application. The book is based on the author's more than ten years of experience working with Oracle, and is filled with dependable, tested, and proven performance optimization techniques.
Praise from the Reviewers: "The practicality of the subject in a real–world situation distinguishes this book from others available on the market." — Professor Behrouz Far , University of Calgary "This book could replace the computer organization texts now in use that every CS and CpE student must take. . . . It is much needed, well written, and thoughtful." — Professor Larry Bernstein , Stevens Institute of Technology A distinctive, educational text onsoftware performance and scalability
Words and character-bigrams are both used as features in Chinese text processing tasks, but no systematic comparison or analysis of their values as features for Chinese text categorization has been reported heretofore.
In this work, we provide an empirical analysis of differences in word use between genders in telephone conversations, which complements the considerable body of work in sociolinguistics concerned with gender linguistic differences. Experiments are performed on a large speech corpus of roughly 12000 conversations. We employ machine learning techniques to automatically categorize the gender of each speaker given only the transcript of his/her speech, achieving 92% accuracy. An analysis of the most characteristic words for each gender is also presented.
This paper describes the application of the PARADISE evaluation framework to the corpus of 662 human-computer dialogues collected in the June 2000 Darpa Communicator data collection. We describe results based on the standard logfile metrics as well as results based on additional qualitative metrics derived using the DATE dialogue act tagging scheme. We show that performance models derived via using the standard metrics can account for 37% of the variance in user satisfaction, and that the addition of DATE metrics improved the models by an absolute 5%. ...
We present a corpus-based study of methods that have been proposed in the linguistics literature for selecting the semantically unmarked term out of a pair of antonymous adjectives. Solutions to this problem are applicable to the more general task of selecting the positive term from the pair. Using automatically collected data, the accuracy and applicability of each method is quantified, and a statistical analysis of the significance of the results is performed.
Traditionally supply chain management has meant factories, assembly lines, warehouses, transportation vehicles, and time sheets. Modern supply chain management is a highly complex, multidimensional problem set with virtually endless number of variables for optimization. An Internet enabled supply chain may have just-in-time delivery, precise inventory visibility, and up-to-the-minute distribution-tracking capabilities.

High performance – statistical inference for comparing population means and bivariate data
This chapter will help you to:
test hypotheses on the difference between two population means using independent samples and draw appropriate conclusions ■ carry out tests of hypotheses about the difference between two population means using paired data and draw appropriate conclusions ■ test differences between population means using analysis of variance analysis (ANOVA) and draw appropriate conclusions
The computing world today is in the middle of a revolution: mobile clients and cloud computing have emerged as the dominant paradigms driving programming and hardware innovation today. The Fifth Edition of Computer Architecture focuses on this dramatic shift, exploring the ways in which software and technology in the cloud are accessed by cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other mobile computing devices. Each chapter includes two real-world examples, one mobile and one datacenter, to illustrate this revolutionary change....
Rumen fermentation is an exergonic process that converts feedstuffs to short-chain volatile fatty acids (VFA), methane, ammonia and occasionally lactic acid. Some of the free energy is used to drive microbial growth, but heat is also evolved. The efficiency of rumen microbial growth can have a profound effect on animal performance....
Increased miniaturization of the integrated chip has largely been responsible
for the rapid advances in semiconductor device performance, driving the
industry’s growth over the past decade(s). Soon the minimum feature size
in a typical integrated circuit device will be well below 100 nm. At these
dimensions, interlayers with extremely low dielectric constants (k) are
imperative to reduce the cross-talk between adjacent lines and also enhance
device speed. State-of-the-art non-porous, silicon-based low-k dielectric
materials have k values on the order of 2.7....

Another service is the grading of products by recognized standards of quality. Grading helps
farmers get fair prices for their products. It also permits commercial buyers to make purchases of
such products as milk, butter, eggs, and meat on a basis of quality and price.
Wholesaling and retailing, two essential services, are performed on the widest scale possible.
They reach every community.
Despite the fact that some distressed investors have abandoned the market in the last few
years as the supply of new defaulted debt has diminished, there still exists an impressive number
of investors who specialize in this rather unique asset class. The primary vehicle for investing is
a limited partnership, whereby a particular distressed-asset investment manager raises funds from
financial institutions and wealthy individuals.
Even though actual stock returns do not verify Assumption 1, it is an acceptable first-cut
approximation. This means that we abstract from lead-lag effects (Lo and MacKinlay, 1990),
nonsynchronous trading (Shanken, 1987), and autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity
(Bollerslev, Engle and Woooldridge, 1988). Note that most of the current estimators for the
covariance matrix of stock returns also use this assumption. Future research will be devoted
to relaxing it.
Support Foundation. The support foundation consists of steel made into springs,
coils, or other types of support systems found inside the upholstered item. The steel used for
the support foundation should be tempered to maintain resilience. To find this out, you have
to ask the sales person or read the manufacturer’s catalog.
You can check how well the support foundation will perform by setting on the
furniture and gently bouncing. The support system should push you back up each time you
bounce. You should also place your hand under the cushioning and press down on the
