The cost of operating a building far exceeds the cost of constructing it, and yet until recently little attention was paid to the impact of solar radiation on the costs of heating, cooling and ventilation. And now that there has been a surge in interest in energy efficiency and solar design, architects and designers need a practical guide to the modelling and application of solar energy data.
Gamma rays were discovered by Villard more than a hundred years ago. Rutherford
gave the name -rays to the electrically neutral radiation emitted by the naturally
occurring radioactive materials.
Gamma rays are electromagnetic radiation, photons, which arises due to energy
changes in the nucleus. It does not appear as an independent form of radiation, but it
follows and β decay, in those cases when the newly created core of the offspring is
found in the excited state.
This book is intended as a textbook for a course in radiation physics in aca-demic medical physics graduate programs. The book may also be of interestto the large number of professionals, not only physicists, who in their dailyoccupations deal with various aspects of medical physics and have a need toimprove their understanding of radiation physics.Medical physics is a rapidly growing specialty of physics, concerned withthe application of physics to medicine mainly, but not exclusively, in the ap-plication of ionizing radiation to diagnosis and treatment of human disease...
Radiotherapy, also referred to as radiation therapy, radiation oncology or
therapeutic radiology, is one of the three principal modalities used in the
treatment of malignant disease (cancer), the other two being surgery and
Physics and engineering governing the applications of synchrotron radiation
is based on enormous achievements during more than one hundred years in
the filed of X-ray physics and technology. The contents of this book, starting
with the very general aspects of synchrotron radiation investigated, have
been developed by numerous scientist and experimentalist in this field during
the past 20 years. The readers are recommended to visit the websites of
major synchrotron facilities in the world, and update their knowledge of this
rapidly changing and progressing field.
Since the discovery of X rays by Roentgen in 1895, the ionizing radiation has been
extensively utilized in a variety of medical and industrial applications. And it has also
played crucial roles in development of modern sciences and technologies, as witnessed
by more than 60 Nobel Prize winners awarded for achievements in atomic sciences
and ionizing radiation-related researches.
This book represents a collection of scientific articles covering the field of infrared radiation. It offers extensive information about current scientific research and engineering developments in this area. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised and each represents significant contribution to the scientific community interested in this matter.
The NCRP has long mcog&ed the need for a clear assessment of the
magnitude of doses from various souroes of radiation to which the
population of the U.S. is ocpo9ed. In anticipation of the need to gather
data for input into this process five as&sament committees, each
adhing a different source category, wem established, first in 1971
and then reestablished in 1986. NCRP reports assessing exposum
from natural background, consumer products, and nuclear power gene
ation have recently been published (NCRP, 1987% 1987b. 1987~)...
THE CAMBRIAN RADIATION, which commenced around 550 million years ago,
arguably ranks as the single most important episode in the development of Earth’s
marine biota. Diverse benthic communities with complex tiering, trophic webs, and
niche partitioning, together with an elaborate pelagic realm, were established soon after
the beginning of the Cambrian period. This key event in the history of life changed
the marine biosphere and its associated sediments forever.
The aim of this volume is threefold. It is intended, firstly, as a revision aid for students on Masters level degree courses in Radiation Science. These will already have received lectures at various levels of detail on most of the topics covered here. Experience has shown, however, that in preparing for examinations, especially oral examinations, students benefit from an opportunity to put details in the context of the whole. This I have tried to do by drawing attention to important connections that exist between topics treated in different chapters.
Major advances have been accomplished in recent years in conformal and
stereotactic techniques, dosimetry as well as in target volume concepts, and
clinical studies have been performed. This peer-reviewed volume of Frontiers
of Radiation Therapy and Oncology includes a selection of the important
topics discussed at the meeting on ‘3-D Radiation Treatment: Technological
Innovations and Clinical Results’ which was organized by the Department of
Radiation-Oncology of the Technical University of Munich and focused on
conformal and stereotactic radiotherapy in the treatment of tumors....
The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements
(NCRP) published Report No. 48, Radiation Protection for Medical
and Allied Health Personnel in 1976. Many changes in medical practice
and procedures involving ionizing radiation have occurred in
the intervening 13 years. As a result, the Council determined to
prepare this new report to supersede NCRP Report No. 48. The
primary objective of this new report is to update the material to
include new radiation sources used in medicine.
ADC’s latest addition to its family of outside
plant products, the Radiator II Above Ground
HDSLx Repeater Housing, is a highly cost-
effective outside plant enclosure for local loop
electronics. With its advanced thermal
management capabilities, the Radiator II
extends the life of enclosed cards or repeaters
and reduces costly truck rolls and
maintenance. Radial placement of modular
card cages permits efficient and predictable
thermal transfer for uniform cooling. In
addition, its unique design allows the heat to
radiate externally, increasing the reliability of
the enclosed electronics....

This is the second National Council on Radiation Protection and
Measurements (NCRP) report that provides radiation protection
guidance for astronauts working in low-earth orbit. The guidance in
this Report supercedes the radiation exposure limit recommendations
provided in NCRP Report No. 98 that was published in 1989.
Readers may find some of the radiobiological information in Report
No. 98 to continue to be relevant and of interest and, therefore,
Report No. 98 will continue to be available from NCRP Publications.
This Report emphasizes management’s responsibility in training
employees, and presents criteria for identifying training
requirements for different groups of employees. The type of personnel
to be trained is treated and an extensive coverage of the design
and development of radiation safety programs is provided. The
learning environment and training aids are discussed and guidance
on the audit of training programs is given.
