It’s time we cleared the air about ham radio. If you think of it as staticky transmissions sent by people in the middle of nowhere, think again. Today’s ham radio goes beyond wireless to extreme wireless, Operators transmit data and pictures, use the Internet, laser, and microwave transmitters, and travel to places high and low to make contact. In an emergency or natural disaster, ham radio can replace downed traditional communication and save lives.
Wireless communications is rapidly becoming one of the ubiquitous technological
underpinnings of modern society (such as electric power, fossil fuels, automobiles,
etc.). Few people think about the technology within their mobile phones, remote controls,
garage door openers, GPS navigation devices, and so on. They are always at hand and
reliably work for the user.
Yet even within the electrical engineering (EE) community, radio communication
techniques have a reputation as a “Black Art” that can only be successfully practiced

The third generation (3G) mobile communication system is the next big thing in the world of mobile telecommunications. The first generation included analog mobile phones [e.g., Total Access Communications Systems (TACS), Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), and Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS)], and the second generation (2G) included digital mobile phones [e.g., global system for mobile communications (GSM), personal digital cellular (PDC), and digital AMPS (D-AMPS)].
As stated in Chapter 1, Section 1.2, requirements for International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) include system ﬂexibility, economy and conditions on data transmission speed deﬁned in numerical terms. The Radio Spectrum and RF Environment
Radio is the penultimate medium for mobile communications, but it has also been used for many fixed-site applications such as AM/FM broadcast, satellite trunking, point-to-point microwave telephony, and digital TV. Although there are radio applications in very low frequencies (VLF) and extremely low frequencies (ELF), these bands require extensive fixed-site infrastructure whose size and cost is dominated by the mile-long antennas and megawatt-power handling requirements. The field of wireless radio communications is a young one, dating
back only 100 years or so. In many ways, wireless communications is still in
its stages of early development, its “primitive stage”. Thus, at this time, it can
be expected that new discoveries and advances in technology will change and,
perhaps, radically transform communication theory.
The wide proliferation of wireless communications unavoidably leads to the scarcity
of frequency spectra. On one hand, wireless users become increasingly difficult to find
available frequency bands for communications. On the other hand, many preallocated
frequency bands are ironically under-utilized and thus the resources there are simply
wasted. This situation leads to the introduction of cognitive radio, which was
proposed in the last decade to address this dilemma.
