  • The water-soluble crude polysaccharides obtained from the liquid culture broth of Cordyceps militaris by ethanol precipitation were fractionated by DEAE cellulose and Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. This fractionation process resulted in three polysaccharide fractions that were termed CPSN Fr I, CPSN Fr II, and CPSN Fr III. Of the fractions, CPSN Fr II was able to upregulate the functional events mediated by activated macrophages, such as production of nitric oxide (NO) and expression of cytokines (IL-1 and TNF-).

  • The water soluble crude polysaccharide obtained from cultured mycelia of Cordyceps militaris (CPM) by hot water extraction followed by ethanol precipitation was fractionated by DEAE cellulose and Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. This fractionation process resulted in four polysaccharide fractions that were termed CPMN Fr I, CPMN Fr II, CPMN Fr III, and CPMN Fr IV. Of these fractions, CPMN Fr III was able to upregulate the functional events mediated by activated macrophages, such as production of nitric oxide (NO) and expression of cytokines (IL-1b and TNF-a).

  • Sulfur is the element with the largest number of solid allotropes. Most of these consist of unbranched cyclic molecules with ring sizes ranging from 6 to 20. In addition, polymeric allotropes are known which are believed to consist of chains in a random coil or helical conformation. Furthermore, several high-pressure allotropes have been characterized. In this chapter the preparation, crystal structures, physical properties and analysis of these allotropes are discussed.

  • Thebform of human cAMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitor (human PKIb), a novel heat-stable protein, was isolated with high yield using a bacterial expression system. Assays of PKI activity demonstrated that purified PKIb inhibits the catalytic subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and CD experiments implied that human PKIbcontained only small amounts of a-helix andb-structures, but large amounts of random coil and turn structures, which may explain its high thermosta-bility.
