  • Recent work on Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) has demonstrated the need for regularisation to counter the tendency of these models to overfit. The standard approach to regularising CRFs involves a prior distribution over the model parameters, typically requiring search over a hyperparameter space. In this paper we address the overfitting problem from a different perspective, by factoring the CRF distribution into a weighted product of individual “expert” CRF distributions. We call this model a logarithmic opinion pool (LOP) of CRFs (LOP-CRFs).

  • We use data from the Expenditure and Food Survey (EFS), which is administered every year in the UK. The annual sample includes between six and seven thousand households. For each household, an initial interview collects detailed demographic information. Immediately after the interview, each household member starts a expenditure diary, in which they record everything they buy during the next fourteen days. Diary expenditures are aggregated to “diary weeks” in the data, for reasons of confidentiality, resulting in two seven-day aggregates of expenditure for each individual.

  • Such central queues are called ‘liquidity-saving mechanisms’ (LSMs). There are a number of studies on plain RTGS systems, but only a few on RTGS systems augmented with LSMs. Our work contributes to this line of research. We first model a benchmark system, ie a plain RTGS system where each bank decides: (i) the amount of liquidity to use; (ii) which payments to delay in an internal queue (payments are made as banks randomly receive payment orders, which need be executed with different ‘urgency’).

  • This report presents the full findings from a new and unique survey designed and conducted according to rigorous standards by the EU Kids Online network. It was funded by the European Commissions’ Safer Internet Programme in order to strengthen the evidence base for policies regarding online safety.  A random stratified sample of 25,142 children aged 9-16 who use the internet, plus one of their parents, was interviewed during Spring/Summer 2010 in 25 European countries.

  • The fieldwork of the Flash Eurobarometer 248 “Towards a safer use of the Internet for children in the EU – a parents’ perspective” was conducted between 9 and 17 October 2008. Approximately 12,750 randomly selected parents (including step-parents/guardians) of a 6-17 year-old child were interviewed in the 27 EU Member States. If there was more than one 6-17 year-old in the household, the parents were asked to answer the questions thinking about the child whose birthday was closest to the date of the interview.

  • In a series of preliminary tests, we examined the pattern of mean daily returns throughout the lunar month, including visual inspections of return histograms. This examination reveals one interesting regularity. We observe that high returns tend to cluster around the new moon date, while low returns tend to cluster around the full moon date. Following this observation, we structure our returns tests to reflect the possible difference between new moon and full moon periods.
