This book will help you coach other people simply and easily to improve their performance at
work and in any other areas of their lives.
We have brought this book together after many years of practice, development, refinement,
modelling and analysing what really works for coaches.
We have incorporated some of the techniques from disciplines such as NLP (neuro-linguistic
programming). Other techniques are just ‘common sense’. And some we developed because
we couldn’t find anything else that worked to our satisfaction.
When I fi rst read the draft of The Fundamentals of Literacy
Coaching, a wave of memories and emotions overwhelmed
me. Six years ago, I was one of four elementary school principals
who initiated the Reading Excellence program in Iowa’s Waterloo
Community Schools. I had a lot to learn about such concepts as
walk-throughs, gradual release of responsibility, scaffolding, peer
coaching, modeling, and cognitive coaching—all while leading
the staff of what was then the district’s largest elementary school....

equivalent system can be provided at the host site....
Everyone is talking about coaching. As people who work within the field of learning and
development, we find that we are constantly asked for training in coaching skills and to help
organizations introduce coaching schemes. Line managers are told that an important part of
their role is coaching. Trainers are increasingly asked to coach individuals.
In researching background material for training courses we have found that much of the
training and reading material available focuses on the skills of a coach – the art of active
listening, asking questions, and summarizing action points.
When choosing which typefaces to use for a web-based project, there are a number of
limitations that are not a factor when designing for printed materials. With a print project, the
designer may use any typeface he or she desires, as the typeface is sent to the printer with the rest
of the document (layout, text, colors and images). However, when designing for the web, the
designer is only able to use the typefaces he or she knows are available on all major computer
operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows and the Apple Mac OSX. These fonts are
Communities in crisis suffer a loss of access to
services, which UNFPA works to restore or
to provide in temporary locations. While access
is most obviously a problem for refugees and
the internally displaced, people in surrounding
communities and other family members may
also be affected by the crisis. Access continues
to be a priority once a crisis concludes, during
the process of recovery and rehabilitation.
A clear requirement in achieving this success was establishing the fully integrated management structure
and leadership for the various elements of the program. That task obviously received major attention from
NASA’s top leadership, with strong emphasis on management clearly enunciated by Administrator James

Imagine for a moment that you are a woman who weighs 350
pounds. Only two months ago, you weighed 342 pounds and, in
spite of diets and promises and tablets bought over the Internet,
you gained another eight pounds. You have given up on exercise
because it left you breathless; at night, your face is covered by an
oxygen mask that, at least, lets you get some sleep. Three years
ago you learned that you have diabetes; a year ago you were told
that you needed to have your knee replaced. Your husband left
right after the last pregnancy, one of three children who are now
all ashamed to...
Successful teams strike a balance between two conflicting attributes: individual initiative and group needs. On
the one hand, each individual wants to believe that he or she has an opportunity to make decisions—the
authority to apply his or her talents in coming up with solutions. On the other hand, the larger goal of the
project rules, and each individual must work with the others as a single team.
The perfect cardiac catheterization technique, including good diagnostic and therapeutic
qualities, without risk and with no recovery time for the patient, does not exist. Obtaining
initial access to the arterial circulation is the first and most frequent catheterization difficulty
encountered by the interventional cardiologist during the procedure. Often, it is also the
only difficult part of the exam for the patient because it may cause a vagal reaction or
Bill Cassidy led meteorite recovery expeditions in the Antarctic for fifteen years and his searches have resulted in the collection of thousands of meteorite specimens from the ice. This personal account of his field experiences on the U.S. Antarctic Search for Meteorites Project reveals the influence the work has had on our understanding of the moon, Mars and the asteroid belt. Cassidy describes the hardships and dangers of fieldwork in a hostile environment, as well as the appreciation he developed for its beauty.
Windows 20000 Commands Pocket Reference documents the Windows command mode. It's designed for system administrators, but will also be valuable to many users. It includes most available Windows 2000 commands, as well as the most useful system administration command-line utilities from the Resource Kit. Weeded out of this book are Windows commands and command options that are obscure, obsolete, broken, unacceptably insecure, or frankly inadvisable, as well a few special-purpose classes of commands.
In 2008, utilities reported that an average of 5.5% and a median of 2.5% of customers dropped
out of green pricing programs. Retention rates are still relatively high despite the fact that
electricity and energy prices remained high in most regions of the country throughout most of the
year. This finding suggests that customers tend to be “sticky” and maintain participation in green
power programs, despite electricity and other energy cost increases.
We know that markets are global. The recent crude oil price increases, which translate into higher
prices at the pump, have many causes, including the global economic recovery and unrest in the
Middle East. But a major cause of the recent price rise is the concern that global oil demand will
outpace supply over the next few years. The dependence of the global vehicle fleet on oil makes this
problem especially acute. That’s why we are working to reduce oil demand and increase reliable
supplies of oil around the world in the years ahead,...

CED builds on both the capacities of young women, and community supports, to
maximize resources. Programs and supports offered to young women through the
network of community organizations they already access can start to work with young
women as individuals to prepare them to enter into the waged economy.
If young women are to share equally in efforts toward CED, the gendered implications of
the programs must be considered. A gender-based analysis of current CED programs
would likely find divisions between the types of CED activities women and men do.
The second thing that is notable in the programs of the high achieving
countries is the level of abstraction that is present in the problems students
are expected to do in these early grades. Variables have been introduced
and are routinely used, so students set up and solve simple equations in
second grade and quite sophisticated equations in third grade. There is a
strong belief in the education community in the United States that “young
students learn strictly in context,” which means that they do not believe
young students can handle abstraction.
