Doctor Wooster Beach, the founder of Medical Reform, and now well along in years, came on from the East to take charge of the “clinique” and his text-book— “The American Practice”—was the only book on reformed medicine then available. Text-books of the regular school were still used, but the lectures on practice were carefully revised and presented according to the views of the reformed physicians.

  • OVER THE PAST DECADE, alternative medical therapies have played an increasingly prominent role in American health care. In the nation’s grocery stores, homeopathic treatments and over-thecounter herbal remedies crowd aisles that were once largely devoted to analgesics, sore throat lozenges, and fruit-flavored, animal-shaped children’s vitamins. Eager to fill their beds and their coffers, hospitals advertise—even celebrate—the inclusion of nontraditional medical practices.

  • To tackle polluted source water, water utilities in the region are often forced to install expensive treatment plants that can cost millions to install and operate. USDA economists estimate that removing nitrate alone from drinking water costs more than $4.8 billion a year. The cost of dealing with algal blooms is particularly daunting. The total capital cost of water treatment that would address cyanobacterial blooms and cyanotoxins, can range between $12 million and $56 million for a town of 100,000 people.

  • Population growth and inter-regional migration have been and will be significant drivers for the Turkish real estate markets. The last census counted a population of roughly 70.6 m at the end of 2007, significantly less than previously forecast from the census 2000 data. Nevertheless, the population is growing at a fast pace com- pared to most industrialised countries. In addition, two further trends are noteworthy. Urbanisation is advancing and migration patterns within Turkey favour economically burgeoning provinces.

Studies have shown that political commitment to gender equality is declining when gender is only mainstreamed. The importance of gender targets for securing funding is also being stressed. In addition to a standalone goal, considering gender equality throughout the post 2015 framework is also seen as crucial by many.

  • The tapping of the credit lines were happening at precisely the moment that the risk constraints were binding harder for the banking sector. Tighter value at risk constraints translated to higher shadow value of capital and hence to the desired contraction of balance sheets. Contracting balance sheets of hedge funds and other holders of ABCPs led to a fall in the demand for the liabilities issued by SIVs and conduits. In late July and early August, SIVs and conduits began to experience diffi culties in rolling over their short term liabilities.

Environmental-related occupations – which are expected to experience tremendous growth over the next decade – did not exist in comparable data prior to 2000.

Some 30 years ago, Julian Tudor Hart, a primary care physician practicing in a low income community in Wales, proposed an inverse care law.
