  • Over the past few decades numerous studies have shown an alarming increase in the concentration of atmospheric particular matter called aerosols resulting from a variety of human activities, ranging from agricultural to combustion of fossil fuels. Besides having serious impacts on the health of all living creatures, these particles can affect planetary radiation budget. Consequences of this change include global temperature shifts and the altering of atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns.

  • Evidence grows daily of the rapid changes in climate due to human activities and their impact on plants and animals. Plant function is inextricably linked to climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. On the shortest and smallest scales the climate affects the plant’s immediate environment and thus directly influences physiological processes. On longer and larger time and space scales climate influ- ences species distribution and community composition and determines what crops can be viably produced in managed agricultural, horticultural and forestry ecosys- tems.

  • Clay and clay minerals represent the youngest minerals in the Earth’s crust. Clays are irregularly distributed in lithosphere, as their concentration increases due to the weathering, hydrothermal changes, including anthropogenic influences. Clay minerals occur in all types of sediments and sedimentary rocks and are common in hydrothermal deposits. The interdisciplinary character of clay science follows from the information obtained from the methodology and theory of other natural and technical sciences....

  • Air samples for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were collected on treated silica-gel cartridges (P/N WAT047205, Waters Corp.) using separate pumps. Sampling flow rates were 2.0 L min-1 collected over 15 min to 30 min yielding sample volumes of about 30 L to 60 L. Each cartridge was extracted with 2 mL of acetonitrile. Extracts were analyzed by high- performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector at a wavelength of 365 nm following ASTM D 5197 (ASTM, 1997a). Extract concentrations were determined from multi- point calibrations of external standard mixtures. ...

  • Soil reactivity with chemical oxidants is also important when considering the costs of the use of chemical oxidation. Excessive loss of a chemical oxidant that is reacting with organics in soil, instead of reacting with the contaminants, may preclude the use of the technology as an economically viable approach to site remediation. Different chemical oxidation technologies are most appropriate for particular hydrogeologic conditions. For example, Fenton’s Reagant may not be ideal for groundwater with high concentrations of carbonate.

  • This study examines the relations between earnings informativeness, measured by the earnings-return relation, and the ownership structure of 977 companies in seven East Asian economies. Our results are consistent with two complementary explanations. First, concentrated ownership and the associated pyramidal and cross-holding structures create agency conflicts between controlling owners and outside investors. Consequently, controlling owners are perceived to report accounting information for self-interested purposes, causing the reported earnings to lose credibility to outside investors.

  • The current study was undertaken in a new manufactured house set up as a research facility. The plan was to conduct longitudinal measurements of VOC concentrations in the house along with measurements of key physical parameters including house air change rate, indoor and outdoor temperature and relative humidity, and wind conditions over a period of approximately one year. The primary objective was to evaluate changes in the emissions of formaldehyde and other VOCs in response to time, house air change rate, and the other parameters.

  • No matter what export markets and outlets you target, in this day and age you must be visible to consumers online. Having your own website is valuable whether you are selling your products directly from your own site or just linking your website to the sites where your products are available for purchase. (E.g. your distributor, retail shops or catalogs that carry your products.) If you do not have the capacity to sell products from your own website, concentrate on a few good web pages that tell your products’ stories using compelling pictures.

  • The system of three-dimensional hydrodynamic-environmental models could simulate full advection and dispersion processes of the dissolved and particulate matter as suspended sediment and all oil phases in the realistic marine conditions. The hydrodynamic model provides temperature, salinity and current structure and water level. These variables will be used in the environmental model simulating the advection and diffusion processes for suspended matter concentration, bottom sediment thickness and all oil spill phases in the water and bottom sediment.

  • In order to maintain economic development and minimize future regional and international conflicts, the United States will need sustainable supplies of high-quality fresh water. Solutions to local water scarcity issues will likely require a combination of approaches, including demand management, improved water storage capacity, water quality protection, and advancements in supply-enhancing water treatment technologies. Desalination technologies can create new sources of freshwater from otherwise impaired waters such as seawater or brackish water.
