  • Stories from tribes across the North American continent show both the divergent philsophies, as well as the common ground. The editors have wonderfully resisted any urge to edit these stories. Each chapter opens with an overview provided by Erdoes and Ortiz. There are occasional editorial explanations at the ends of stories. They should expecially be applauded for including stories with humor.

  • Each chapter opens with an overview provided by Erdoes and Ortiz. There are occasional editorial explanations at the ends of stories. They should expecially be applauded for including stories with humor. As someone with Indian ancestry, but not a traditional Indian upbringing, I enjoyed the experience of spiritual concordance with the basic philosophies, no matter which tribe or region of the country was being presented. The book is easily readable by most age groups; parents of younger children could read these as entertainment and even bed-tiime stories.

  • The increasing interest attached to all that part of the American Continent situated within and near the tropics, has suggested the publication of the present edition of Humboldt's celebrated work, as a portion of the SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY. Prior to the travels of Humboldt and Bonpland, the countries described in the following narrative were but imperfectly known to Europeans. For our partial acquaintance with them we were chiefly indebted to the early navigators, and to some of the followers of the Spanish Conquistadores.

  • The present performance is, so far as the end could be reached, the fulfillment of a design, formed about twenty-seven years ago, of one day presenting to the world, if I might, something like a complete grammar of the English language;--not a mere work of criticism, nor yet a work too tame, indecisive, and uncritical; for, in books of either of these sorts, our libraries already abound;--not a mere philosophical investigation of what is general or universal in grammar, nor yet a minute detail of what forms only a part of our own philology; for either of these plans falls very far short of ...

  • With youth, marketers have tapped into an audience that is particularly vulnerable to the messages and tactics of the food and beverage industry. For many low-income youth, there is little time or money for structured, healthy meals in the presence of an adult. Marketers have capitalized on this situation by using a number of marketing channels to reach children and adolescents. These span television advertising, in-school marketing, product placements in movies and television programs, kids’ clubs, the Internet, toys...

  • Overall, adults age 65 and over do not appear to be using the Internet. This population has resisted going online, but all age groups have begun to gain ground as users. (Laurich 2002, 176). Laurich maintains that the elderly believe the Internet does not contain information highly relevant to their needs. Moreover, more than any other age group, they tend not to have Internet access either in their home or at work, though they do use the Internet at libraries. 22% of adults 65 and older have access to the Internet. Of the 22% of the US adults aged 65...

  • The inner magnetosphere is an important region of space plasma because it is one of the “kitchens” for space weather effects. The scientific understanding of this region is important for predicting the interaction between space environmental conditions and human activities. The inner magnetospheric plasma is a unique composition of different plasma particles and waves. It covers a huge plasma energy range with spatial and time variations of many orders of magnitude.

  • All operating systems provide services for programs they run. Typical services include executing a new program, opening a file, reading a file, allocating a region of memory, getting the current time of day, and so on. The focus of this text is to describe the services provided by various versions of the UNIX operating system. Describing the UNIX System in a strictly linear fashion, without any forward references to terms that haven't been described yet, is nearly impossible (and would probably be boring).

  • I shall commence this chapter by a description of Spanish Guiana (Provincia de la Guyana), which is a part of the ancient Capitania general of Caracas. Since the end of the sixteenth century three towns have successively borne the name of St. Thomas of Guiana. The first was situated opposite to the island of Faxardo, at the confluence of the Carony and the Orinoco, and was destroyed* by the Dutch, under the command of Captain Adrian Janson, in 1579. (* The first of the voyages undertaken at Raleigh's expense was in 1595; the second, that of Laurence Keymis, in...

  • A precursor to most of the recent structural changes in the stock exchange industry has been the process of demutualisation (or, in some cases, privatisation), which took its beginning with the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1993. Virtually all stock exchanges in OECD countries have followed suit. In the sample covered by this article, all exchanges have demutualised and only three of them (TSE, WSX, SWX) have not yet listed.

  • So, for example, economic dynamics play an important “input” role in innovation. The term “economic dynamics” captures a variety of indicators: venture capital, broadband penetration, investments in R&D, and business formation. The index enables one to explore each of these variables in depth and download detailed data by simply clicking the drill-down feature. Human capital is also a vital input to innovation. Therefore, the index provides different perspectives to evaluate a region’s human capital.

  • I have been asked to write a series of works which should deal with "real adventures", in parts of the world either wild and uncontrolled by any civilized government, or at any rate regions full of dangers, of wonderful discoveries; in which the daring and heroism of white men (and sometimes of white women) stood out clearly against backgrounds of unfamiliar landscapes, peopled with strange nations, savage tribes, dangerous beasts, or wonderful birds.

  • Although ubiquitously expressed, the transcriptional factor CP2 also exhib-its some tissue- or stage-specific activation toward certain genes such as globin in red blood cells and interleukin-4 in T helper cells. Because this specificity may be achieved by interaction with other proteins, we screened a peptide display library and identified four consensus motifs in numerous CP2-binding peptides: HXPR, PHL, ASR and PXHXH. Protein-database searching revealed that RE-1 silencing factor (REST), Yin-Yang1 (YY1) and five other proteins have one or two of these CP2-binding motifs....

  • Our study assessed the opportunity for library space saving and cost avoidance through the systematic and intentional outsourcing of local management operations for digitized books to shared service providers and progressive downsizing of local print collections in favor of negotiated access to the digitized corpus and regionally consolidated print inventory. As detailed in the report that follows, the organizational change required to achieve these gains is likely to be substantial and challenging to implement.
