The innate antiviral response requires the induction of genes and proteins
with activities that limit virus replication. Among these, the well-character-ized interferon b (IFNB) gene is regulated through the cooperation of
AP-1, NF-jB and interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF-3) transcription fac-tors. Using a constitutively active form of IRF-3, IRF-3 5D, we showed
previously that IRF-3 also regulates an IFN-independent antiviral response
through the direct induction of IFN-stimulated genes.
A novel geneZC3H12A, encoding MCP-1-induced protein 1 (MCPIP),
was recently identified in human peripheral blood monocytes treated with
monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) and in human monocyte-derived
macrophages stimulated with interleukin (IL)-1b. These experiments
revealed that the gene undergoes rapid and potent transcription induction
upon stimulation with proinflammatory molecules, such as MCP-1, IL-1b,
tumour necrosis factor aand lipopolysaccharide.
The c-jungene encodes the protein Jun, a component of the
essential transcription factor, AP1. Jun/AP-1 occupies a
central position in signal transduction pathways as it is

Virus infection results in the activation of a set of cellular
genes involved in host antiviral defense. IRF-3 has been
identifiedas a critical transcription factor in this process. The
activationmechanismof IRF-3 is not fully elucidated,yet it
involves a conformational change triggered by the virus-dependent phosphorylation of its C-terminus. This con-formational change leads to nuclear accumulation,DNA
binding and transcriptional transactivation.
Developing countries’ markets depend extensively (technically and financially) on
international services. Reasons for this include (among others) structural, financial and
technical constraints, including the small size of markets, under-capitalization of
insurance companies and insufficient experience and know-how. Usually, insurance
industries there also have a shortage of skilled personnel.
It is diﬃcult to discern exposures from institutions’ reported credit market posi-
tions. Indeed, common data sources such as annual reports and regulatory ﬁlings record
accounting measures on a large and diverse number of credit market instruments. Ac-
counting measures are not necessarily comparable across positions. For example, the
economic value of two loans with the same book value but diﬀerent maturities will react
quite diﬀerently to changes in interest rates. At the same time, many instruments are

The dehesa is both a resilient and a fragile system; its resilience derives from the
perseverance of its operators, and its fragility is its susceptibility to unfavourable economic
factors that influence its profitability (Siebold, 2009).
Livestock grazing is an integral management component of a dehesa and undergirds the
conservation function of the system. The livestock component, including cattle, accounts for
the largest fraction of revenue from the dehesa.
At the end of a day and a half of presentations and discussion, participants concluded that,
while more research is needed, there are immediate opportunities to mediate the growing health
risks associated with poor eating and physical inactivity. These areas suggest both voluntary and
regulatory strategies that focus on strengthening industry accountability, while changing the
food and physical activity environment and promoting healthier behaviors.
The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) is
responsible for cleaning up radioactive waste and environmental contamination resulting from
five decades of nuclear weapons production and testing. A major focus of this program involves
the retrieval, processing, and immobilization of waste into stable, solid waste forms for disposal.
This report, which was requested by DOE-EM, examines requirements for waste form
technology and performance in the cleanup program.

Managing water for all is not only a question of
resource availability and money, but also a matter of
good governance. Water involves a wide range of
stakeholders at basin, municipal, regional, national
and international levels. In the absence of effective
public governance to manage interdependencies
across policy areas and between levels of
government, policymakers inevitably face obstacles to
effectively designing and implementing water reforms.
In addition, good governance and financial
sustainability are inextricably linked.
